

HICKORY- Harold Dargon Shull died peacefully Wednesday, October 26, at Catawba Regional Hospice surrounded by his loving family after a period of declining health. He was born November 23, 1929 and was a life-long resident of Catawba County. Mr. Shull attend Banoak School and was drafted into the Army. He served in Frankfort, Germany. Following his Army duty, Harold bought his first truck that began his trucking career. He was the retired founder and operator of Harold Shull Trucking, Inc. which transported new furniture to the Midwest. During his trucking career he mentored and taught numerous young men to become professional truckers and provided employment to many. Mr. Shull was preceded in death by his parents, David Marshall Shull and Dessie Johnson Shull. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Michael Shull. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Burton Shull of the home; daughters Libby Shull of Greensboro and Jennifer Shull Kistler of Hickory; grandsons Tyler Harold Shull of Asheville and David Keith Kistler of Mebane; sisters Eunice S. Spencer of Hickory and Betty S. Huss and husband Thomas of Cary; and brothers Dwight Shull and wife Frances of Valdese and Allen Virgil Shull and wife Bonnie of Vale. Also surviving are nieces Ramona S. Hardiman of Lexington, Teresa S. Lail and Wanda S. Robinson of Vale; and nephews Rick Huss of Spartanburg, Phillip Huss of Cary and Scott Huss of Raleigh. Harold’s hobby was work; he grew up working on a dairy farm, went into the Army, came home and bought a truck: the rest is history. As if trucking didn’t keep him busy, he developed a sizable heard of Charolais beef cattle that he managed as long as his health allowed. He discovered the Charolais breed during a weekend leave while in France. Having been baptized on August 4, 1935, Mr. Shull maintained a life-long membership in Ebenezer United Methodist Church where services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm. Pallbearers will be Charles Kistler, David Shull, David Shook, Elbert Williams, Jason Burton, and Alan Lutz. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Crisp of Gastonia, a life-long friend and army buddy; Jimmy Goble of Spartanburg, the first employee Harold hired; and Jim Leatherman, a longtime neighbor. The Shull family wishes to thank any who visited or performed any kindness toward Harold. A special expression of gratitude goes to Visiting Angels for their assistance in allowing Mr. Shull to be cared for at home until he was moved to Hospice on Sunday.
