

Hickory - Helen Hartzoge Duncan, 95, of Hickory passed away Saturday May 17, 2014 after a brief illness at Catawba Regional Hospice. Helen Hartzoge Duncan was born in Catawba county Oct. 22, 1918 to Dewey Lee and Fannie Poovey Hartzoge. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Martin Mack Duncan, in 1989, two brothers: DL Hartzoge, Jr and Charles D. Hartzoge, also two sisters: Martha H Tucker and Pearl H Kirby. Helen is survived by two daughters: Patricia L Duncan and Peggy Duncan-Lane of Conover, NC. Three grandchildren: Ginella L Hurley , husband W C Hurley of Hickory; Rev Eric R Lane, wife Beth Ebersole Lane of Granite Falls; and Kyle T Lane, wife Teirsa Rockett Lane of Conover. There are nine great grandchildren : Adriona Hurley, William H Payne, Alexis (CB) Hurley, Melissa and Chris Wilson, Jamie and James Starbuck, Lindsey Lane, Kevin Lane, Paul Lane, Courtney Lane, and five great-great grandchildren, and by one sister, Frances H Hartman of Rosewell, N M and a brother, G William Hartzoge of Midland, Texas. Also surviving, special niece, Glenda T. Mitchell and husband, Earle “Tommy” Mitchell of Claremont, and numerous other nieces and nephews. Helen was a life long resident of Catawba County. She began working in Textiles at the age of 18 years, and retired as a braider operator from Shuford Mills at the age of 65. After the passing of her husband she returned to work at Wendy’s on Sandy Ridge Rd for 13 years. She was a lifelong member at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. There she worked in the Sunday School, helped with food preparation, served in various WELCA positions, and other volunteer activities. She was also a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Over 60 of Springs Rd group. The family will receive friends Monday May 19th from 6:30 PM to 8:00PM at Hickory Funeral Home. The funeral will be at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Tuesday May 20th at 10:00AM with the Rev. William B. Miller-Zurell officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 547 6th Street NW, Hickory, N.C. 28601.
