On Behalf of Myself, My Family and All of Joel Broder's Dear Friends Who Could Not Be at his funeral- Let Me extend Our Heartfelt Condolences to His Beloved Wife Cessi, Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

My Mom Annie (A True Yiddish Philosopher) Once Told Me that You are A Lucky Man If You Have a Good Wife, Good Children and a Few Good Friends. Well, Joel Broder was That Kind of Friend to me. We were Great Buddies for Over 65 Years. Through the Good Times and the Rough Times, We Always Could Count on Each Other for Unconditional Love and Support!

Growing Up in Brooklyn, Joel Broder was the Smartest and Handsomest Guy in Town. Known as Mr. Personality and Mr. Boro Park, He Knew About Every Happening and Every Party Going On. He Truly was "The Man!"   Milton Berle, a Humorist and Great Philosopher As Well, Once Said: "An Optimistic Friend is Somebody Who Always Sees the Bright Side of Your Problems" and "A Real friend is a Guy Who Walks In When Everybody Else Walks Out!" 

So Let Me Go Back 50 Years..... When My Beloved Dad Eli Died Suddenly in the Middle of a Snow Storm in New York, It was Joel Who Galvanized and Led All of Our Friends to Perform the Many Tasks (Including the Digging of the Grave) During a Contentious Cemetery Strike in Order to Bring Some Peace and Closure to My Mom, Sister and Myself! After this Selfless Act, Joel Could Do No Wrong in My Book. He Was Given "Grave-Digger's Immunity".

On a Lighter Note, Joel Became My Son Evan's Favorite "Chosen Uncle".....I Will Never Forget the Many Dolphin Games, Baseball Games, Dodger Town and Dinners that They Went To During Law School. And Of course, When Joel (as a Notary in the State of Florida) Proudly Swore Evan In as an Attorney.  

I Could Go On and On About Joel's Character, Sincerity and Loyalty, But I Think You Get the Idea...….."Shalom" Dear Friend and Rest In Peace....May the Good Lord Look Over You and Keep that Handsome Face Smiling! I Will Miss You. Love Howie

Joel Broder was a fun guy.  His spirit was alive with joy and adventure.  I was part of his life during my high school years as one of the guys and gals in our Brooklyn neighborhood. We connected again fifty years later when Joel organized a reunion of neighborhood pals.  It was great fun seeing old friends and reliving past events. Joel hadn't changed a bit, still enthusiastic and creative.  We got to talk a few times after the reunion and he was working on ways for everyone to get together again before it was too late. I'm sorry I couldn't get to a New York gathering last July because now it is too late. So long Joel. You made a difference in people's lives. We'll miss you.

My "uncle" Joel was truly a one-of-a-kind and a Brooklyn original.  Although not a biological relative to me, he was my father, Howard's, oldest and dearest friend.  He was like an  uncle to me from the time I was born.  Joel was the kindest and most fun-loving guy I have ever known.

My fondest memories spent with "uncle" Joel were at the Dodgers' spring training facility "Dodger-town" in Florida when I was a little boy.  My "uncle" Joel was friends with every ballplayer (past and present), coach, scout, equipment manager and trainer.  By the  end of a day spent at spring training with him, I had amassed more autographed balls, bats and pictures  than a 10 yr old kid knew what to do with! 

 The day would of course end with a short detour off the highway and deep into the Florida citrus groves to pluck the most delicious grapefruits known to man.  Days like these spent with my father Howard and my "uncle" Joel were some of the happiest in my life.  

I have no doubt that my dear "uncle" Joel is in the most beautiful ball park in heaven, enjoying the game he loved and probably snagging an autograph from an "old-timer"!



I first met Poppy almost 31 years ago and he quickly became my role model  just as he has for countless people throughout the years.  I grew up without a father and meeting Fraya and marrying into this family is the best thing I’ve ever done, I now had a Dad. Throughout life’s up and downs the one constant in the family was Poppy, if you needed him he was there, he always knew what to say what to do to make everything right. Poppy was the epitome of the patriarch of the family and his legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and the family tree will continue to grow from what started in 1966.  I will miss his physical being but take comfort knowing his spirit will never ever die, he’s still with each and every one of us. Thank you Dad for everything you’ve done for me and the entire family you will not be forgotten, you will live on in our memories. I love you old man!

Even though I was always Eddie’s little sister Joel always made me feel like I had another big brother. We shared so many wonderful times just hanging out on 13 th Avenue and 48th Street.  Joel you will always be in my heart. RIP my friend. 

My fondest memories are of Poppy spending time with our crazy large family!  Holiday gatherings, Disney World trips, our trip to Cooperstown, trips to the mountains and shopping trips to the mall....just to name a few. Poppy absolutely adored spending time with his kids and grandkids and he was so joyful seeing them happy. 
He was also very entertaining and what a great storyteller!  I loved hearing all his stories of growing up in Brooklyn. Every story seemed to start with “Back in 1955 on “Flatbush Avenue...”
I am so grateful to have had him in my life and very blessed that he also called me “daughter.” We will miss you Poppy and will continue to stick together and carry your name on. We love you. 

My entire life, this man was my 2nd father. Always treating me (and the other 88 of us) as one of his kids. 
He has impacted my life in so many ways, that life without him in it will be difficult. 
He loved unconditionally, but beware if he did not like you.
He adored my husband and especially my daughter Mel named for my dad who was his brother (in-law).
My dad and my uncle had many funny stories from their days in business together.  Now they will be reunited to pick up where they left off-laughing, having fun and loving each and everyone of us.
My dearest uncle, brother to my mom, my heart is broken in a million pieces, but I will  keep your laughter and love in that huge space you occupy forever in my heart! 


Joel was the unofficial mayor of Borough Park for our generation.  A superb natural athlete in many sports, a fashionista long before the term was coined, a quick witted jokester, and the undisputed champion of chug-a-lugging Yoo-Hoos, among other talents and skills. Most notably, Joel was a friend to literally hundreds in the neighborhood and the Catskills in those days, and later in Florida and elsewhere.
In 2007, Joel and I connected and pursued his passion for a Borough Park reunion, a get together of some of the many who 'hung out' on 48th and 13th, the "Y", the pool room at Menorah, and elsewhere in the neighborhood. He doggedly pursued locating and contacting folks all across the country with the result that nearly 100 showed up, from 10 states, to reminisce and honor him days before his 70th birthday in 2008.  I saw him last summer, just after his 80th, and will miss his phone calls and recollections of 'the old days' until I meet him again.
