Known as the “fun uncle,” John was devoted to his nephews, Josh Harris, 17; Ben Harris, 14; Dylan Machi, 10; and Keenan Machi, 7. He taught the boys by example, loving each of them as individuals and being there for the special moments and milestones in their lives.
John was a talented musician and singer, and a huge fan of the Rolling Stones. Like his favorite band, he was more Keith than Mick, more substance than style, just to the right of the spotlight. John saw the Stones in concert more times than we can remember, most recently traveling to his beloved Pittsburgh in June for the “Zip Code” tour.
Known for his quick wit, his kind nature, soft spot for rescuing animals (and sometimes people), John loved harmless mischief. He also loved racing go-karts, playing video games and anything that allowed him to compete with his older brother David. He and his sister Ann often joined forces to find homes for the stray cats that would instinctively show up at his doorstep in Conover. In addition to caring for the many animals that found their way to him, John was a dedicated caregiver for both his parents, James B. Harris and Norma B. Harris, as they passed in recent years.
Many people will miss John’s incredible spirit, including his sister-in-law, Kathy Harris; his Aunt Louise (and husband Henry) Adams, cousin Phillip (and wife Penny) Adams, cousin Andy (and wife Sherry) Adams, and his co-workers at Prysmian Group, especially those in the quality department and his former fiber plant teammates.
We invite you to join us for a celebration of John’s life at 3 P.M. on Sunday, September 13 at Drum Funeral Home in Hickory, and to remember him fondly, as we will, the next time you hear a Rolling Stones song.
