On Friday, June 3, 2016 the Lord called Dad home. He was surrounded by his family. After months of failing health, Dad was cared for at home by his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by former wife Laverne Jolly Clemmons and his wife of 35 years, Betty Sue Haynes Clemmons; four sisters, Cecilia Wong Norton, Jackie Pearl Rutherford, Evelyn C. Thompson and Alice Holder; and brother, Charles James Clemmons. Dad was a loving and devoted spouse, he cared for Mama at home during years of her ailing health.
Pop never formally joined a church as a member, although he knew the Lord. He would express that Jesus was the source of his strength and salvation. He attended Hartzel Memorial United Methodist Church with his daughter, Martha’s family and assisted numerous times over the years with various fundraisers.
Pop was known for his famous fried potatoes and onions. He enjoyed fishing, fishing trips, hunting and gardening. Pop loved his children and grandchildren and was very proud of each of us. He always had time to lend a helpful hand or give valuable words of wisdom. Although Dad only completed school through 3rd grade, he could do math mentally like a scholar, build and repair most anything!
Pop explored several occupations, worked on the farm, meat cutter, caddie for golf course and welder. He was employed by Conover Foam and Fiber for many years as a sewing machine mechanic. He attended Catawba Valley Technical College and received a certificate in sewing machine repair. Pop retired in 1989 after 12 years at Century Furniture Company.
He leaves to cherish his memories; son, Leonard Len Clemmons, Jr. (Shata) of Hickory, three daughters; Deanna Clemmons-Ortega of Detroit, Michigan, Sandra Haynes (Tim) of Newton and Martha J. Pegues (Rodney) of Hickory; nine grandchildren; Chris Haynes, Omar Haynes (Cordelia), Alexcia Pegues, Breonna Pegues, Evelyn Easter, Ahmani Pegues, Jaylen Clemmons, Brendalynn Clemmons and Dakota Lippord; two great grandchildren, Jayden Haynes and Zavion Haynes.
