

He was born July 22, 1974 in Catawba County to Ronald Stephen and Trudy Moss Starr.
Stephen graduated from Fred T. Foard High School where he was active in marching band and other ensembles as a leading trumpet player. After receiving an associate’s degree from Catawba Valley Community College, he attended Lenoir-Rhyne University where he majored in philosophy and theology and was active in campus ministry and Playmakers. Stephen was nearing completion of a degree in mortuary science at Fayetteville Technical Community College at the time of his death.
In recent years Stephen sang in the Carolina Moonlighters; traveled to St. Louis, New York, and New Orleans to participate in A Cappella/”Barber Shop” singing groups; and supported events and programs of Lenoir-Rhyne University. During the two years Stephen lived with his grandfather amidst declining health due to Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), he helped organize a major fundraiser for ALS research. Stephen’s generosity and loving spirit was further displayed by his willingness to provide a home to stray animals. After becoming a member of the Catholic Church later in life, he continued to visit worship services in the Lutheran, Episcopalian, Baptist, and other traditions.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Helen Moss.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his sister Connie Starr; and many special relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 18, 2011 from 6pm to 8pm at Hickory Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 1:00pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 4536 Hickory-Lincolnton Highway, Newton 28658 with Pastor Andrew Weisner and Pastor Gene Bruce officiating.
Burial will follow at church cemetery.

1425-113 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. In memory of Stephen’s grandfather who had Lou Gehrig' disease.

Mr. Starr was an employee of Kirksey Funeral Home as a Family Service Counselor. The staff of Hickory Funeral home will be assisting with Mr. Starr's Services.
