Wayne was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him George Jake McCorkle and Martha Graham McCorkle, his father Bill Lackey, sister Charisia Bumgarner, and parents in love, Ann and Lamar Hunt. Their reunion brings comfort to all who knew him.
He leaves behind a legacy of love with his wife of 21+ years, Krista McCorkle. Also left to cherish his memory are his son, Morgan Brown (Danielle Pruitt), granddaughter, Olivia Brown, mother, Dorothy Lackey, sister, Marlene Lackey (Dean Byrd), brothers in love, Kelly Hunt and Kevin Hunt (Tricia) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Wayne will always be lovingly remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Wayne always had a love for music and dancing. He was a DJ “DJ Ol’Skool” and hype man in Catawba and surrounding counties for years and used to host parties just so he could play music, hang out with friends and spread joy. Wayne loved all sports, especially football. He was a true diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, he also loved UNC Tarheels, LA Lakers, and the Atlanta Braves.
Wayne always took pride in his job and loved his work friends at GKN Driveline. His lil sis, Val Duvila Perez, work wife, Barbara Presley, and his “son” Davon Lowe.
Wayne was a husband, father, son, brother, but most of all he was a wonderful friend. He took his relationships very seriously and tried very hard to stay in touch with his closest friends. He called often and went to visit as much as he could. He considered lots of his friends, his family.
Though our hearts are breaking in his absence, we find peace knowing Wayne made all the decisions and called all the shots until the very end. Now he’s resting in paradise surrounded by peace and reunited with his grandparents, whom he’s missed for over 40 years.
He will always be remembered as the life of the party and loved endlessly by those he held most dear.
A celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, in the Chapel of Hickory Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m.. Interment will be at Central Cemetery in Newton, NC.
As this is a celebration, guests are asked to show their love and support by wearing any of the colors of Wayne’s favorite sports teams, ball jerseys, concert t-shirts, whatever makes you feel good and think of Wayne. Wayne wants us to be happy.
