Steve came into our lives almost 30 years ago. My mother, Frances Vitacco, and Steve met and fell in love. We, the Vitacco family, gained a stepfather, a grandfather and a dear friend. We had the privilege of knowing and loving Steve; he enriched my mother’s life as she enriched his, and our whole family reaped the benefits. 

Steve was a bright light who embraced life with a passion and brought us along with him for the ride. He was a chef who loved to cook and feed you, an artist who willingly gave us his work, an avid gardener who handed out his harvest, especially his tomatoes. He was an athlete, who taught us how to roller blade and he reminded us of the need to keep walking and to always enjoy life, family and friends as he did. 

We all miss him dearly but I, like many of you, have wonderful memories that will keep him close to us for a lifetime.

The Vitacco Family

Six years ago, I met Rose Bruno and she mentioned that she loved to dance and was there any single men at the party who also loved to dance. I pointed out one man and then another. The second man was Steve. Once they started to dance they never stopped. It was great to see them together. I met them at Robinson's Tea Room once and it was plain to see they were very fond of each other. I learned that Steve was a self taught artist and once he showed me some of his art work. I was amazed at how good he was. His paintings were everywhere in his condo and when I asked if he wanted to sell them he said they were for his family when he was gone. So I decided to do an art show so everyone at Fairfield could see his work. A few other residents displayed their work as well. Steve was so excited to have people enjoy his work. He was modest and explained his paintings to anyone who asked. It was a good day for Steve and those who attended were surprised at the talent we had right next door. Steve was always humble and grateful. He was kind and a true gentleman. I got to know him more the last few months and saw what a beautiful person he was. I know he is reaping his heavenly rewards as I write this but to his family and friends I send my deepest sympathy in the loss of a man I wish lived forever.  Sincerely, Carol Walsh

We have always been so happy that Steve entered into our lives through the relationship he had with our mom, and grandma, Rose. He was a very caring, loving and humorous person who always welcomed us whenever we came for a visit in New York. We loved spending time with Steve. He took us to the gym, watched me play Pickle Ball, showed us his garden, his paintings and cooked dinner for us many times. Linguini with Squingelli was my favorite and he made sure to make that when I came to town. My last trip we even played Dominoes. Although he didn't win, he was a good sport about it, lol. My husband and girls and I will miss his cute smile, laughter, jokes and kind nature. We were fortunate enough to be able to show him Bryce Canyon National Park as well as Kolob Canyon at Zion National Park when he came to visit us in Utah. We also took him to Coal Creek Water Falls, Cedar Breaks National Monument and Brianhead ski resort. He struggle with the high elevation at our cabin and although he was having some challenges breathing he still was able to make the most of our time together and never complained. He loved to live and experience new things and we are all so sad that he has passed away. We pray for the repose of his soul and for all of his family, friends, and everyone who was touched by the life of this terrific man, Stephen Zappala!  We are blessed to have known him. Steve was in my life for six years in which we created great memories. We had lots of laughs, traveled, danced a lot, and shared many good times with all of his families and friends. My family and I loved him very much and we shall treasure his memory. He made it so easy to do so. If I had those six years to do over I would do it in a heartbeat. My heart and prayers go out to the Zappalla and Vitacco families, his many relatives and friends and my family. We all had a deep love for him. Although his physical body could not sustain him in the end, his soul will live on forever because he was filled with so much love, and love never dies because Love is eternal. Rest in Peace my sweetheart.

Rose Bruno

We extend heartfelt sympathy to Steve's family and friends.  We have many fond memories of Steve & Rosemarie from the 12 years we lived as neighbors in Levittown at the opposite corners of Prairie and Saddle Lanes.  We were young families then and our children filled the neighborhood with the lively sounds of youngsters playing together and growing.  We grew so close in sharing our lives in those days that they became Godparents to our youngest daughter.  The memories of neighborhood gatherings and block parties, helping each other and sharing favorite meals remain in our hearts.  Steve was always willing to offer a helping hand and advice... ever displaying his sense of humor.  Over 50 years have passed since our business transfer to Virginia but the fond memories live on in our hearts.  May Steve find eternal rest in the arms of our Lord.

Please accept our sincere sympathy.  We met Steve through his friend Rose.   Steve had quite the sense of humor.  We enjoyed verbally sparring with the master.  Over past  the past few years we .became good friends spending time with him on our trips to New York and his visit to Arizona .  We will truly miss him.

I will cherish the memory of “Dad Z” forever. He was my bonus Dad, even though he was my former father-in-law.
