

.Dorothy Stewart Slate, age 93, passed from this life to the next on January 25, 2012 at River Landing At Sandy Ridge, Colfax, NC. Dorothy was born on August 2, 1918 in Farmville, VA to parents Lincoln Robert Stewart and Nan Albert Stewart. Dorothy had an older sister, Mildred S. Clinard and a younger brother, George A. Stewart, both of whom predeceased her. Dorothy and John William Slate, Jr. were married on August 30, 1941 and celebrated their 59th Anniversary prior to his passing in 2001.
After graduation from High Point High School, Dorothy attended and graduated with a Bachelor Of Art’s Degree from Randolph Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, VA. She was active in several school organizations, but most important to her were her “sisters” in the Chi Omega Sorority.
Dorothy’s first love and dedication were to her family; however, she was involved in several organizations. She was a member of The High Point Historical Society, The Green Thumb Garden Club, The Junior League Of High Point, The High Point Literary League, The North Carolina Museum Of History, High Point Community Concert, The Stewart Society Of Scotland and a member and past President of The High Point Debutante Club.
Dorothy’s second love was for her church, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church which was built by her father and grandfather. She was a life long member and was involved in several Church organizations. She was a member of the Church Altar Guild, St. Margaret’s Chapter and a member and past President of the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Women.
Surviving Dorothy are her children Linda S. Gedney and husband Steve, of Rock Hill, SC, John W. Slate III and wife Barbie, of High Point, NC, Patricia S. Freeman and husband Douglas, of Jacksonville, FL, Robert G. Slate of High Point, NC and Richard W. Slate and wife Cathy, of Hickory, NC. Dorothy or “DeeDa” as she is lovingly called, is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Dorothy’s family would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincerest thanks to River Landing and specifically the staff in Muirfield. The care and compassion they exhibited helped Dorothy maintain her dignity and quality of life.
A Visitation will take place in the Living Room off the Main Lobby at River Landing on Friday, January 27, 2012 and a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 108 West Farriss Avenue, High Point, NC. Following the service, the family will be in the Church Parrish Hall to greet and meet family friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the New Educational Building Fund at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church or to an organization of one’s choice.
