Elizabeth Carolyn Cochrane Barker, 90, crossed over to the welcoming arms of her beloved David on Wednesday, July 17. Her life began on August 9, 1925, as one of five siblings of Roy Albert and Nora Cochrane of the Oakview neighborhood in High Point. She attended High Point High School (now High Point Central), and graduated in the Class of 1942, nicknamed “The Class that Went to War.” Carolyn started her life-long career in the furniture industry at Alderman’s Photography Studio as a stylist. Her talents were many, including hand painting negatives to remove unwanted backgrounds on finished photographs. In 1945, she met the love of her life, David Luther Barker, Jr., and they were married on April 17, 1946. In 1962, Carolyn and David moved to Lenoir where they relocated David’s company, Lynn Photo, which was a commercial photographic studio for area furniture manufacturers. Carolyn and David returned to their hometown of High Point in the fall of 1971 and opened Service Craft Photo (SCP Studios) at the corner of Johnson and Kelly streets. They initially processed rolled film and gradually moved into photographing furniture and accessories. Their success in the furniture and accessories photographic industry continued until their retirement in 2004. Carolyn and David were long time members of High Point Friends Church and greatly enjoyed the fellowship they received over the years with its members. Many times, they would serve the community’s needy by providing meals for individuals that asked for assistance. Carolyn was an avid reader and enjoyed oil painting when time allowed. Together, she and David had two wonderful children who survive her, JoAnn Barker Graham of Beaufort, SC, and Ronald (Ron) R. Barker of High Point. Carolyn was very proud of her grandchildren, Christopher Graham, Zoe Graham Balsamo (husband Sal), Truman Barker, and her great grandchild, Isabelle “Izzy” Balsamo. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, David Luther Barker, Jr., and four siblings, Ted Cochrane, Leonard Cochrane, Alberta Smith, and Lucille McGuire. Carolyn asked for a simple service for family and friends only. In lieu of flowers, she would appreciate donations to be sent to the High Point Friends Meeting.
