

Eugene Leroy Black, Jr., age 86, a former resident of Penny Road, was called home by his heavenly father, on Thursday, May 1st at Starmount Golden Living Center where he had been a resident since April 18th.
A native of Greenville, Alabama, Leroy was the son of the late Eugene Leroy Black, Sr. And the late Hazel Irene Roper Black. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy retiring in 1987 having achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He would later retire, as a safety manager from the U.S. Postal Service. A Mason and a Shriner he was a member of Numa F. Reid Lodge # 344 AF&AM. He was a great man who loved his family dearly and wanted us to celebrate his life and remember him with love and admiration. He never met a stranger and would give you the shirt off his back if he thought that you needed it. He never had a bad word to say about anybody. He loved the Lord and lived his life with kindness and love for everyone. This is what the Lord asks of us. He was truly a wonderful Christian. On August 28th, 1950 he married the former Clara Lucille Dees who died April 9th, 1999. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, William Manning Black and two sisters.
Surviving are a daughter, Clara Lynn Black Cantrell and her husband Jim of Kernersville; two sons, Eugene “Gene” Leroy Black, III and his wife Sharon of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Joseph Roper Black; six grandchildren, Jennifer Spencer and her husband Blake,Stephanie Smith and her husband Derek, Caitlin Price and her husband Chris, William Black, Rachel Black and David Black.
Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Dylan Greene, Riley Greene, Haylee Spencer, Grayson Price, Trenton Smith and Hunter Price.
A funeral service, to celebrate Leroy’s life, will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at Sechrest Chapel in High Point, with the Reverend Karen Kurtz, associate pastor of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, one hour prior to the service, at Sechrest Funeral Service. Burial, with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard, will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers and funeral escorts will be the North Carolina Patriot Guard Riders.
