High Point – John Thomas Linton, 80, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Hospice of High Point after a long battle with congestive heart failure. John was born in Wakulla Co., Florida on October 18, 1932. John was the oldest child of Sidney Eugene Linton and Mary Clarissa Linton (née Taylor).
Mr. Linton was the national advertising manager for the High Point Enterprise newspaper in the 1970’s. He later worked in advertising and as a Total Quality Control manager at Harris-Teeter grocery chain in Charlotte and Greensboro. He retired from Harris Teeter about 10 years ago.
John Linton was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of High Point where he served as a Stephen Minister and a faithful member of the men’s Bible study for many years. Mr. Linton was also a High Point City Councilman for Ward 3 in High Point from 2003 – 2005.
Mr Linton is survived by his brother Sid Linton of Rockingham, NC and his daughters Laura Price of Concord, NC and Liz Léon of Ashburn, VA. Mr. Linton was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Billie Linton (née Bell), and his beloved son Benjamin Sidney Linton.
Friends and family remember Mr. Linton as one of the funniest men they knew. His creativity, sharp sense of humor and unusual point of view made him an excellent conversationalist who maintained a positive outlook via his trust in God. He liked to say he was “as original as ignorance could make him.”
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to all who cared for Mr. Linton and helped support the family during the final months of his illness.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 20, at the First Presbyterian Church of High Point, North Carolina. The service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Ken Broman-Fulks. The family will receive friends after the service in the Family Life Center of the church.
After the visitation in the Family Life Center, a celebration of life pig–pickin’ will be held at the home of John Linton. All who knew and appreciated him should plan to attend.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 918 North Main Street, High Point, North Carolina, 27262 OR to Hospice of the Piedmont. You can call 336-889-8446 to make a gift to them by phone.
