HIGH POINT --- Lois Louise Thompson May, 92, of High Point passed away on February 2, 2012 at High Point Regional Hospital. Born in Morganton on September 16, 1919, to the late Elgie Lafayette Thompson and Julia Emma Taylor Thompson, she made High Point her home most of her life. A graduate of Morganton High School, Lois was married over fifty years to James Sturgis May, who predeceased her, and spent many of her early years of marriage assisting him as he traveled and reported on significant events of World War II for the U.S. Navy for the military newspaper Stars and Stripes. After the war they moved to High Point where Mr. May worked as a reporter for the High Point Enterprise. When her husband opened his securities firm, J. Sturgis May and Company, Lois assisted him as company administrator.
Lois was a devout Christian and served as pianist for Rocky Ford Methodist Church in Morganton where her family were charter members. She was one of the oldest living members of First United Methodist Church where she served on various committees, projects and circles and a friend of High Point University. In her younger years Lois was an avid golfer, tennis player and equestrian. She spent many an afternoon playing golf with her family and friends at the High Point Country Club. She and her husband also enjoyed playing bridge with friends and spent a great deal of time traveling in Europe, Africa, many of the islands and the continental United States. Especially in her latter years, Lois loved watching and discussing Carolina Tar Heel and Panther sports with her son and grandchildren.
Surviving are her son, J. Randall (Randy) May and his wife Kathrine Long May of High Point and four grandchildren, Ian May of Nashville, Tennessee and Morgan, Adam and Larkin May all of High Point. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Sturgis May, a younger sister, Mary Sue Thompson, and a granddaughter, Julia Aiken May. A memorial service to celebrate Lois’ life will be held on Wednesday, February 8 at 3:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, 512 N. Main Street, High Point, with Dr. Chris Fitzgerald officiating, following a private commitment service at Floral Gardens Memorial Park. Family will receive friends in the church parlor following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Julia Aiken May Memorial Fund at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 108 W. Farriss Avenue, High Point, or to First Methodist United Church.
