Heaven welcomed Sarah “Betty” Highbaugh home on Sunday, September 23, 2012. Hospice of the Piedmont lovingly cared for her and her family as she lived through the final phases of cancer. Born March 17, 1932 in Huntsville, Al., to James Dallas Baker and Novie Delilah McChunn Baker, her spirit lived beyond her . On May 25, 1953, Betty married William Kendrick “Bill” Highbaugh, following God’s guidance through out the south. Wife , helpmate, mother, sister, teacher, friend… Betty was all that and much more. From teaching elementary school, Sunday school, leading and directing children’s choirs, to owning her own business, Betty gave of herself. She has helped many happy brides start their new lives with wit, wisdom, and assurance, making sure everything was “just right”. She was the Sunday school teacher for the McFarland class at Christ United Methodist Church for more than 30 years, Hospitality Hostess for the Community Concert Series for more than two terms. She volunteered with the Mental Health Associates of the Triad teaching sewing. She loved to cook and was famous for her spaghetti and often shared it by taking it to others when they were sick or to say “thank you”.
Preceded in death by her loving husband Bill in 2002, and her son William Kendrick “Rik” Highbaugh in 1972. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Highbaugh Brown, Catherine’s husband John C. Brown, and her grandson Avery Kendrick Brown, her brother Hollis Myers Baker of Ga. with his wife Mary, and sisters Annette Norton of Ga., and Gayle Couch with her husband Win of Va. She has one sister-in-law, Rebekah H. Lipscomb of Miss. Betty was one of ten children and has numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life is to be held at Christ United Methodist Church in High Point, on Sunday, September 30, 2012, at 3:00pm. Family will welcome guests in the parlor before the service at 2:00pm. Memorial may be made to the “ Rik Highbaugh Piano Scholarship” at H. P. U., or Hospice of the Piedmont.
