John was the son of Garland and Valenta (Doyle) Hurst, who precede him in death. He was known for his values of hard work and humor, traits that would define him throughout his life. His easy-going nature and storytelling ability made him a beloved figure among family and friends.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, John served three tours honorably during the Vietnam War as a member of the Seabees. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career; he was an avid member and former commander of the Wixom and Milford American Legion, where he dedicated himself to supporting fellow veterans and his community.
John was a devoted father to his two daughters, Jennifer Hurst and Carolyn (Eugene) Robiadek. He was also a loving brother to his sisters, Rita (Brian) Moore and Margaret (Tom) Quinn, and a proud uncle to his nieces and nephew, Sean (Megan) Quinn, Devon (Jodi) Quinn, Colin (Lindsey) Quinn, Egan Quinn, Melody Morse, Patrick Moore, and Helen Moore. He was a beloved granduncle to Hannah, Ethan, Natalie, Beatrice, Emerson, Henry, and Roman. John was also a proud fur grandpa to Teke and Arya.
John was an avid golfer and fisherman. A fan of traveling, he enjoyed going to Florida and going on cruises. He also spent time watching Lions’ and Tigers' games. He had a love for music, particularly Jimmy Buffett, which complemented his laid-back approach to life. Additionally, John enjoyed playing Mahjong in his later years.
In honor of his service, John will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan in the springtime. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shriners Detroit Chapter, located at 37987 Interchange Dr., Farmington Hills, MI 48335-1006, to continue John’s legacy of service to his community.
