Randy was very thoughtful of others and came up with ways to be helpful when they didn’t even know they needed help. I got a text from Randy, kinda out of the blue, and he said he and Edie were going to Purdue to watch the Spartans play the Boilermakers in football. He knew my daughter had just started her freshman year there and asked if there was anything she needed from home. I happened to have a box that I had set aside to consider mailing to her but it was kinda big and was going to cost a lot to ship, so it was just waiting until we made our next trip, probably to pick her up for thanksgiving a couple weeks later. Randy swung by one day on his way home from work and grabbed the box. He and Edie took it right to the front desk at her dorm and she had it later that night. It wasn’t anything she couldn’t have lived without, but she was grateful to the McCoys for bringing it. Randy did things like that and this was just the one that sticks in my mind. I believe Purdue won, which really was an oddity.

To my forever sweetheart.  You were my rock, my love, my entire life.  My heart will never be the same.  You always took care of everything.  You made sure every possibility was covered and taken care of.  You would be meticulous and plan everything.  You were always quick to help in any situation.  You made sure that my sugars were always taken care of.  Acting quickly every time assistance was needed.  Even learning how and when to administer glucagon injections (he hated shots).  So many memories, but too little time to make more.  We talked about growing old together.  How I wish we could still do that.  I will miss everything about you, but mostly your quiet way of just doing things to get them done.  Until we meet again, take care of all our loved ones.  I'll see you when I get to heaven.  Love you always!

They say dating someone’s little sister is one of life’s most intimidating experiences—especially when the older sibling is a brother!  After witnessing Kim and Randy’s relationship, I knew exactly who I needed to impress… and it wasn’t just her.

From the very beginning, it was clear how deeply he loved his sister—my now wife—and over time, that protectiveness became something else entirely: a brotherly bond between us. We bonded over all things Michigan State, our love of technology , and trading stories from our travels. He was smart, loyal, and always curious—about the world, about new ideas, and most of all, about how to ‘show up’ for the people he loved.

He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a rock for his family. Almost everything he did was in service to others—quietly, steadily, and without needing recognition. That kind of love leaves a mark on everyone lucky enough to witness it.

He will be missed by so many—but never forgotten.

I have many fond memories of my dear nephew Randy as he was growing up and into manhood.  And what an awesome man he became!  As he grew up in a home where music was an important element, I remember some of his earliest words as a toddler were "Glen Campbell!  Glen Campbell!", who was a popular singer at the time.  It was so cute the way he would say it.  Another fond memory was a trip to California with Randy, who was a young teenager at the time, and my parents.   We attended the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, and also visited the ship Queen Mary in Long Beach.  Years later, Randy would actually participate in the Rose Parade as a proud member of the Michigan State University Marching Band when the MSU football team won a spot in the Rose Bowl.
In recent years, Randy was a tremendous help to me, fixing things and installing new and needed light fixtures in my condo.  And earlier this year, he ordered a new computer for me and spent a day at my condo setting it up for me.  I really counted on his knowledge and expertise in so many ways.  He always knew what was needed, found the best solution, and was always a step or two ahead of the game.  He was always so willing to help, and I always knew he would be there for me.  I will always miss my dear and awesome nephew very much.

When I suffered a bad fall down my basement stairs a year ago, you and Edie immediately came to my aid, bringing things to the hospital that I needed from home. Then you and Victoria brought me home from the nursing home a month later and helped me get settled. I will never forget your loving kindness and care at that most difficult time in my life. You miraculously managed to create a whole family of angels, and I'm certain you have now taken your place in the eternal heavenly host.

And honestly, if it weren’t for him, I never would’ve made it to Calculus my senior year. Math was challenging for me at times, but he had a way of explaining it that actually made sense—clear, calm, and somehow patient even when I was frustrated and dramatic about every assignment. He walked me through equations, proofs, and late-night panic, never making me feel less-than for struggling. He didn’t just help me pass—he believed I could actually understand it. And because of him, I did…..sort of:)
That’s who he was. The one who showed up. The one who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.
He also had a way of taking care of everyone around him. When someone in the family needed help—whether it was fixing something, moving something, or just showing up for moral support—Randy was the one who came through. No big announcements, no need for recognition—he just showed up. That was his love language: presence, reliability, quiet strength. And we all felt it.
The other day, I went on a walk with Riva to clear my head—to try and find the words I needed for my brother’s memorial. I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary. I just needed some space. Some quiet. A little breath of peace.

As we walked, something caught my eye. It was Morel mushrooms. A whole bunch of them. I could hardly believe it—this was the first time I’d ever found them myself. I started gathering them, one by one, my heart beating faster with every discovery. And as I kept going, I stumbled on something else: golf balls. Just lying there in the woods on this old farm.

Later that day, I counted the mushrooms. There were 58 of them. Randy’s age. And the golf balls? He left this earthly life at the golf course he worked at. And three—that was my jersey number. He knew that.

 It felt like more than coincidence. It felt like him.

 Like he knew I needed a sign. Like he found a way to remind me, once again, that he was still showing up. Still steady. Still constant.

Later that day, I counted the mushrooms. There were 58 of them. Randy’s age. And the golf balls? He left this earthly life at the golf course he worked at. And three—that was my jersey number. He knew that.

I was walking on the trail again this morning and I asked God, please send me a sign my brother is with me today and he sent me this.  One of the biggest Morel Mushrooms, in plain sight.  No hunting involved, just there… present

We all know my brother was kind, loyal, and he was so smart. He wasn’t the loudest in the room, but his presence filled every space he walked into. And though he's gone, that presence remains. I feel it in certain songs. In the echoes of our many Spartan moments. In the memories that come back unexpectedly and hit like a wave.
I’ll miss him for the rest of my life—but I’ll also carry him with me. In every note I sing, play, or conduct. In every MSU game or event. In every activity I do to become a better me. In every song that reminds me of who we were together.

Thank you for being my big brother. For being my constant support. I love you, always.  -Your little sister.

He had a thing for “Careless Whisper.” It is that one song that all young saxophones feel the need to add to their repertoire.  I still laugh thinking about how he played it over and over on his saxophone from the basement—like, for hours. At the time, it rattled the metal floor heaters of my bedroom and tested every ounce of my patience, but now… it’s one of my favorite memories. 
Randy was always so proud of his little sister. I felt it in the way he talked about me to others, and even more in the way he treated me—supportive, protective, and sometimes just patiently tolerant of my early-morning arguments with Mom. I know I was a handful, but he never made me feel like I was too much. 
Another bond we shared—one that ran just as deep as our love for music—was our love for Michigan State. We both attended  MSU and bled green and white. We weren’t in the marching band at the same time, but it still connected us. He carried the Big Ten flags with pride. I played trumpet. Different roles, different years—but part of the same legacy, the same traditions, the same sound of Spartan Stadium on a fall Saturday. That experience shaped us both, and it’s something I’ll treasure even more now, knowing we were part of something that tied us together in such a meaningful way.
He also pushed me to be better, even when I didn’t realize that’s what he was doing. He was always up for kicking a soccer ball, playing catch, or having me pitch asoftball to him—whether I felt like it or not. He’d tell me I needed to practice certain things if I wanted to get better. At the time, I thought it was just him being persistent, but now I see it for what it was: him investing in me, believing I could grow, and showing up to help me do it.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8-This passage is a meditation on the seasons of life. It reminds us that just as nature follows cycles, so do our lives-moments of joy and sorrow, gain and loss, beginnings and endings. Each time has a purpose. Even the most difficult times like today. They are not meaningless. God is present in every season, and nothing is wasted. We are not in control of all things. This passage invites humility, peace, and trust in the timing of life. And Rather than resisting this moment, we are called to live fully in it. If you are mourning, mourn deeply. If you are healing, embrace that grace because each season matters. This passage acknowledges our grief, honors life's complexity, and offers hope: that mourning is not the end of the story.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;

There are so many things I could say about my brother, but if I had to choose just one word to describe him, it would be constant. He was always there for me throughout my life—steady, dependable, strong in that quiet way that didn’t demand attention but left an impact just the same.
We shared a deep love for music—it shaped both of our lives. Whether it was blasting our favorite songs on repeat, debating over what counted as “real” music, or just being in a house where music was always playing, it was the backdrop to our bond.  Continued....

I first met Randy at Wayne State University. Over the next few years, we shared many math classes working on our Teacher Education Certifications. Randy always walked us back to our cars that were in a dark, scary parking structure in Detroit. Thanks Randy!

So sorry for your loss. Randy was such a big part of our lives. A fond memory was when we’re on family vacation in Tennessee. Our family had arrived later than the others and we needed to run to the store. Randy rattles off directions ( as he always did) on the best way to get there .  I didn’t have the heart to tell him I wouldn’t remember anything past the third road. He always had the navigation down pat.

One of my favorite memories of Randy was after he had made the family some of his smoked brisket- he had several different sauces that we could try with his brisket.  He would explain the sauces and which he thought complimented the meat well. He would explain his process of smoking the brisket and you could tell the passion he had for getting it right.  I could easily relate because it reminded me of the passion I have about making pizza or chicken wings.  He was detail oriented when preparing food and took pride in getting it right - something we both had in common.  You’ll be missed Randy.

I remember the first time I met Randy, when Noah and I were dating. He was so welcoming and just had to show off his smoked meat and cheese. I told him how much my dad loves cheese and Randy insisted I bring some smoked Gouda home for him. We thoroughly enjoyed that cheese with some wine and crackers. Randy and the rest of the McCoys made me feel so welcome in their home.

I remember when uncle Randy smoked a whole bunch of different cheeses. He let me and my other family members pick our favorite smoked cheese and then sent us home with a vacuum sealed brick of smoked cheese. It was delicious and a very kind thing for him to offer, he brought us all a lot of joy.

Memory with Uncle Randy: We were on a family vacation in Tennessee, and I was trying to spit cherry pits as far as I could off the balcony. Uncle Randy jokingly said, “Well that’s not very lady like!” And proceeded to have a contest with me to see who could spit the pits the furthest

Memory with Uncle Randy: The year I spent studying at Michigan State, Uncle Randy was constantly looking out for me. He took me out to multiple meals/walks around campus during football season, and introduced me to the best spots on campus!

I always enjoyed uncle Randy’s cooking and having conversations about the flavor and methods to making his foods. I feel like I am a more knowledgeable chef because of him.

One of my only memories of Uncle Randy with the short amount of time I have been part of the family was when I came over to his house and he was so proud to show us how he had connected all the lights in the house to Alexa!

Randy always ensured our visits with the McCoys, whether we dropped by his place for Thanksgiving or met up for family vacations, brimmed with hospitality. I remember it always feeling comforting whenever we were all under the same roof. He was a bright spot in our family and will be greatly missed.

My favorite memory with uncle Randy was when we were on our first cruise together as a family (carnival), uncle Randy was on my team for trivia. I was blown away by all of Uncle Randy’s trivia knowledge. From what I remember, we actually got in the top 3!

Thanksgiving 2018 was a wonderful time when we all shared family time with Randy at his home.

One of my favorite memories of Randy was the Game Day Saturday he and Edie took me and a friend to see his beloved Spartans play my beloved Fighting Irish at MSU. I cannot remember who won but I do remember what fun we had. We had great seats, great weather and great friends.  He will be missed but I know he will be cheering on his Spartans from the best seat in the house. As always Randy… GO IRISH 🏈🍀

Cousin Randy was a big part of my early life. He was like a big brother to me.  He always took an interest in me, was so kind and patient and really took me under his wing.  Every summer, we used to go to Higgins Lake with grandma and grandpa. He taught me to play baseball (spent hours playing catch with me). We would play miniature golf, eat pizza, watch sports, ride go carts.  Those were such happy times.  Some of the best times in my childhood. He even let me play with his old Gi Joe figures which I thought were so cool! I really looked up to Randy and loved him so much.

In 1996 I moved to England (where I live now) and got wrapped up in my life here. I really lost touch with the family at that point. However I always remember the wonerful times I spent in Mishigan. I watched from afar as Randy grew into a great man, a loving husband, a proud father, a respected teacher. I would think of him often remembering the times we shared and was happy to hear from Edie that he would speak of my fondly sometimes too.

A couple years ago my mom had a major accident. Randy immediately stepped up and helped her when she needed it most. I'm so grateful.  I felt so helpless being all the way over here.. That was Randy though through and through. Selfless... generous... kind. Would do anything for others. He was a beautiful man and I feel privileged that I had  the chance to spend those years with him. My only regret is that I never contacted him as I meant to... to thank him and let him know how much he has always meant to me. I hope he knows somehow.

Now Randy is gone. My only solace is knowing that he is now reunited with his mom, grandma and grandpa, holding baby Patrick in his arms.  I have no doubt that Randy will be there, waiting at the gates until the very last of us have finally come home. That is his nature. Randy represents the very best of the Clausen / McCoy family. I miss him dearly and look forward to reuniting with him on the other side.

My heartfelt sympathy to you dear Edith and family.  Sending God's prayers and peace across the miles from Oklahoma.  Words cannot describe what your family is feeling.  I only know that - one day we will see each other again in Heaven.  Cling to the Lord and your family and friends during this difficult time.

My condolences to the entire McCoy family following the loss of their beloved Randy. For many years, Randy was a dedicated math teacher and Varsity soccer coach at Lake Orion High School. He was known for placing  the interests of his students and fellow teachers far ahead of his own. Like many teachers and coaches, we’d  talk about successes in the classroom and wins on the athletic field.  But, unlike others. Randy’s quick, clear headed thinking credited him with saving the life of a student. There can be no higher calling.  Randy was also  a proud member of the Michigan State University Marching Band. Together, we enjoyed sharing memories of our good times on the East Lansing campus. You will be missed, my friend!
