While our paths crossed briefly, I will always remember how Reni's smile would brighten the room and make my day better. I am grateful to have known her and thankful that she will live in our hearts and continue to inspire us.

Reni, what a mighty and fierce tiny woman.   Even last week she said  she hoped she would make it until a cure was found.  Reni loved her family so much and fought this horrible disease with all of her being.  Reni,  you taught us all how to live each day and to appreciate each day. Reni was a remarkable person who thought she was just ordinary. I knew her for such a short time, just two years, but wished I'd met her long ago. Oh, how I hoped and prayed I'd have her as a friend far longer.
We met when Reni's daughter, Ainsley visited her grandparents house and played with a neighbor -- my granddaughter, Elizabeth. When I learned that Reni was battling cancer I volunteered to help her capture her own life on paper, for posterity... which to Reni and me meant mostly for Ainsley, just in case, that she would know more about her mom.
While we wrote I was flabbergasted at all that Reni had done and what a marvelous path she'd pulled herself along. She told me, when I'd exclaim over one of her accomplishments or the richness of her history, that "Oh really it wasn't special..." But it was. It is. 
While we wrote, Reni kept on doing incredible things, not the biggest one being to just keep on going despite all that cancer took out of her. She continued fully engaged in life, in her family, in her work, even in the face of diagnoses that would have sent a lesser person to cower in a closet. She did it in large part to have however much more time she could have with Ainsley, for Ainsley. 

Now I hope Ainsley will ask questions about her mom because through the story Reni will continue forever, and give her little girl all she now can of the gifts she wanted to pass on. Her drive, her intelligence, her awareness of but refusal to back down from big challenges. Over the course of the two years I knew Reni, I saw her pull herself back from so many hard blows that I began to think she wasn't just buying a bit more time but was going to beat all odds. She would go on to see Ainsley grow up. What a surprise it ultimately was to me, and how ironic that Reni who paid no attention to limitations, boundaries or "glass ceilings" did have to bow to Death.

I hope that over the years family and friends will continue to talk to Ainsley about Reni, and encourage Ainsley to read her mom's story. I wish I could do more but that's certainly what I will do.

Dear Reni, I didn't have long to know you, only a short time; but in that time a saw such strength, courage and beauty! In a previous position I literally met thousands of people all over the country battling cancer and I can tell you those traits are rare especially in the face of this terrible disease.
