I met Cal when I was 14 yrs old.  He drove up to our house with a Boers Transfer semi ready to move our family to Holland.  Cal was extremely friendly and outgoing, enthusiastic about his work, and one heck of a recruiter.  I’m not quite sure what he said but he had me lugging furniture the rest of the day.  It was fun and his personality made it that way.  Little did I realize at the time he had me hooked as a future employee.    Cal’s love for jokes and laughter was contagious during coffee break.  Cal’s morning ritual was making the famous ringer run.  If he got donuts, or “ringers” as we called them he would have a captive audience to hear his reenactment of hilarious events.  One of his favorites was the day he tossed lit firecrackers under a truck the mechanic was working on.   Cal’s humor and laughter will live on in all of us who knew him.    So Karen, Kristen,Amy,Andrew and Tim,  Cal was a wonderful man, a genuine friend, and a compassionate boss.  I am forever grateful for the relationship we had. Dear friends and family of Cal, 
I worked my college summers with Cal and the team in the late 70’s and early 80’s.  At the time, Cal was chief mechanic with a wicked sense of humor.  We could always find him in the back bay tearing something apart or putting it back together.  I came back early one afternoon and went looking for Cal and without notice, he threw a tennis ball into my chest.  He had that evil little smile on his face and chuckled.  Hard to get angry with him.  It was Cal’s way of keeping the place lite and honest.  Boers helped me pay my way through college. They gave me my first plane ride to Atlanta.  I built friendships and did stuff I didn’t think a 150 lb kids could do.  Thanks Cal!  RIP and I celebrate your life today.

Our sincere sympathies to the family in the passing of Cal. He will be missed and we pray for peace and comfort for all who mourn. We were neighbors and friends for many years and even boarded our horse with Cal. He was a good and generous man and always had a smile and interesting conversation. Also worked at Boers and appreciated his helpful and kind words. Thank you Cal for being a great example to us all!

Cal had been in the fire service for quite a while before I came to Holland Township, quickly we connected, his connection with everyone on the department was genuine and true. Always good for a joke or able to make some of the toughest situations better. For reasons unknown he always embodied the character “HONDO” to me so many years ago that’s what I started to call him. Every time I saw him I would yell out “HONDO!”, he would chuckle and smile always quick with a “what’s up Davey?!?”… Not just speaking for me but for all the many firefighters that had the honor to serve with HONDO we will miss you and your memories will always make us smile.. Until we meet again my friend!

One of the greatest men on this earth unexpectedly went to be with Jesus today. Our hearts are broken and it will take a long time to recover. Cal, you meant more to our family than you ever knew. You taught Taylor the ins and outs of the barn, you provide a job for her that she adored and never once complained about, you shared lunches, fed her nutty cones, were patient and kind and most importantly, passed on your love and admiration for horses and all animals. You did so much for our daughter and for that we are eternally grateful. You were and always will be one of her greatest role models. Boer family, we grieve with you over the loss of an amazing man. ❤️
