Doris was born in West Brighton to Louis and Lillian Meyer. She graduated from Curtis High School and the Pratt Institute. Upon receiving her degree from Pratt she worked as a commercial artist for Abraham & Straus and, after taking a break to raise her children, joined the art department of the Staten Island Advance. She retired in 1989.
Doris married her high school sweetheart Robert Sterner in 1947 and moved to Eltingville in 1951, where she remained until beginning residence at American House in 2018. Doris was an active member of Eltingville Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Council Member, quilter, and coordinator for the Annual Country Fair. She was also a member of the South Shore Garden Club, winning many prizes for her floral arrangements, and served as a Cub Scout den mother. She enjoyed painting, gardening, boating, fishing and travel. Her husband was always with her, until his death in 1993. In her later years, yard sailing became a favorite activity.
Doris was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and cherished her time with her family. She is survived by two sons and their wives: Robert Sterner (Christine) of Holland, Michigan and Christopher Sterner (Colleen) of Palmyra, Virginia; five grandchildren (Danielle Sterner, Kirstin Ting, Lauren Stennes, Allison Rund and Benjamin Sterner); and eight great-grandchildren (Shayla Sterner, Will Rund, Lily Stennes, Quinn Sterner, Vera Ting, Helen Stennes, Peter Rund and Max Ting).
In this unprecedented time of need, and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Meals on Wheels of Staten Island, mealsonwheelsofstatenisland.com, or your local food bank. A private funeral service will be held in Holland, with interment in Ocean View Cemetery in Oakwood, Staten Island, at a later date. Please visit www.lakeshorememorial.com to leave a message or memory for the Sterner family.
