

James was born in 1937 to James and Sadie Kooman. He graduated from Hudsonville High School and went on to work in construction and as a realtor. He married Betty VandenBosch, and together they had three children.
James loved his family and spending time with them, whether watching Detroit Tigers games or sharing special moments. He also enjoyed going on cruises with his wife Betty – together they have been on over a dozen cruises throughout the years. James was also known for his strong faith and service to the church. He was a current member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and a former member of North Holland Reformed Church where he served as Elder, Deacon, a member of the mission action group and the choir.
He is survived by wife Betty Kooman of Holland; children Diane (Barry) Westveld of Zeeland, Dave Kooman of Holland, and Dan (Bonnie) Kooman of Zeeland; as well as grandchildren Mandy (Scott) Plumer of Arvada, Colorado; Krysta (Andy) Quick of Borculo, Michigan; Anna (Ben) Eisele of Hudsonville, Michigan; and Nicholas Kooman of Zeeland. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Mason and Ella Plumer; and sister-in-law Arlene Kooman of Oregon.
Services for James will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Covenant Presbyterian Church - 1015 E. 32nd St. Holland, MI 49423. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. A private family graveside service will take place at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Crossroads Prison Ministries, an organization that James and Betty volunteered at for over 10 years.
