

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and daughter Shelley. He is survived by his wife Beverly, children Kurt (Stephanie), Kyle (Yvonne); stepchildren William (Lisa) Beall, and Sarah (David) Oom, and several grandchildren.
Other survivors include siblings, Marilyn (George) Kolean, Richard Plagenhoef, and Sally Morris and several nieces and nephews.
Roger proudly attended Michigan State University on a full tennis scholarship and attained pro status. He was a passionate MSU fan his whole life. His favorite saying was: "It is a good day when MSU wins and U of M loses."
After earning B.S. and Master of Arts degrees at MSU in Secondary Science Education, Roger taught one year in Mason, MI before returning to Holland High School where he taught Biology and other science courses for 28 years.
He was a Master Educator who made learning fun. He was also an outstanding tennis coach at Holland H.S., the 22nd Street courts, and private lessons.
He was a most effective HEA, MEA, National, and International teacher contract negotiator. He improved the economic benefits and working conditions for teachers throughout his educational career.
Roger will be remembered for living out his faith, his strong work ethic, love and service to family, competitive card playing, shopping for bargains, sense of humor, and his big laugh that filled a room. He also loved fishing, cottage life, and traveling.
A celebration of Roger's life will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Friday June 23rd at First Presbyterian Church at 659 State St. in Holland.
Roger would be delighted if you wear green.
