Carmel Coyle Hartnett, 82, of Lighthouse Point, FL, USA, died April 7, 2023. Carmel, daughter of James and Bridget Coyle, loving and beloved wife of Daniel Edward (Don) Hartnett, passed away peacefully with her children at her side. She is survived by her children Brian, Edward, and Teresa, daughters in law Denise and Moe, son in law Mike, and seven grandchildren, Savannah, Jack, Maxine, Megan, Zachary, Aidan, and Matthew, of whom she quite literally could not have been prouder.
Carmel emigrated from Ireland in 1958 at the young age of 18, and worked as a nanny in her early years in the USA to support herself as she went to beauty school. Soon after, she met Don, her anamchara (soulmate) and they married in 1963 in the Bronx, New York. The births of Brian, Edward, and Teresa soon followed. She continued working part-time as a hairdresser, a job she enjoyed that allowed her to express her creativity while socializing as well.
Don’s career with Pan American Airlines afforded Carmel and Don the opportunity to travel the world, and enjoy that opportunity they did. After the loss of the love of her life in 1997, she returned to Ireland for a time before settling in Lighthouse Point in 1999, where she created a new life for herself, enjoying the Florida sun, with the support of so many friends, new and old.
An avid reader and strong proponent of education, particularly for girls and women, she was a proud volunteer at the Lighthouse Point Library in recent years, and was an active leader in Tír na mBláth, a group committed to the preservation and celebration of Irish music, dancing and song.
Carmel was a loving sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, advisor, neighbor, and friend to so many, and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial mass was said at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Lighthouse Point, FL on Monday, April 10, 2023. Funeral Mass to be held at Noon on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the Church of the Sacred Heart. Bangor Erris, County Mayo, Ireland, with burial afterwards in Bangor Erris Cemetery.
