Chris was born in Sturgis, MI to Jack Berchiatti and Janice (nee Tarrant) Berchiatti on July 16, 1961. The youngest of three sons, Chris was a “preemie” weighing 2lbs 6oz. at birth. Always a fighter, Chris became a competitive swimmer/diver and gymnast in high school. He graduated from Fremd High School in Hoffman Estates, IL, and attended California State University at Fullerton majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Psychology, while making the Dean’s list three times. While in school in Chicago, Chris was approached by a modeling scout. He accepted the agency’s offer and had a short and successful career as a model in both Europe and in the States before returning to his college studies. The work encouraged his love and interest in fine art and fashion. After college, he moved east to Washington, D.C., and then to New York City where he honed his knowledge in the art field as an adviser to collectors at the Martin Lawrence Gallery in SoHo, leading to his appointment as Director of the New Jersey branch of the esteemed gallery. South Beach called and Chris became one of the young entrepreneurs who helped gentrify the soon to be internationally recognized destination. He opened and successfully ran a gym on the beach before being tapped by the new owners of The Raleigh Hotel to manage and oversee the hotel’s swimming pool club and spa, becoming the favorite personal trainer for both local and visiting celebrities in South Beach at the time. After his stint at the hotel, Chris decided to return to his passion for fine art and opened a consulting firm in the field. Chris was a charming, loving, joyful soul who brightened any room he entered. His ever-present brilliant smile and sparkling blue eyes were an invitation to his warm heart and outgoing personality. His boisterous laugh echoed his constant jokes and stories. He was the best friend you could always trust and share your inner most thoughts and he would hold them in confidence in his heart and soul. Chris is preceded in death by his mother, Janice, and his brother John; and is survived by the love of his life and spouse/partner of 25 years, Steve Powell, and their faithful Vizsla, Jackpot; his father, Jack (“Step Monster” Dee); brother, Scott (Debbie); and niece, Amber (Kelly Nicholls). Chris will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of his company and his love. A Celebration of Chris’ beautiful life will be held at Hugh’s Culinary, 4351 NE 12th Terrace, Oakland Park, FL 33334 on January 30, 2022, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the Humane Society of Broward County in his honor.
