Elnora (Anderson) , the third of eight children born to Thomas W. Anderson and Mabel Ferril, was born at home, April 25, 1919 in Zion Station, KY.
Her favorite pastimes as a child were reading, playing cards (Rook) , and "hide & seek" with neighbors, and singing. She remembered sitting on the front porch and singing every hymn she knew in the hymnal. If there was one thing she could have kept from childhood it would have been her signing voice.
After World War II, Elnora married returning serviceman, Albert A. Huff, in Detroit on November 24, 1945. After 39 happy years, Al preceded Elnora in death in 1984. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Percy, Herman, Harry Lee, Edward and David. She is survived by her two children, Sharon Huff of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, Allen Huff of Biscayne Park, FL; granddaughter (Allen's daughter) Sarah; and younger sisters, Evelyn Wright of Bluffton, OH and LaVerne Mason (husband George) of Fort Collins, CO.
Elnora's first job was a caregiver for a new mother who was bed-bound. Elnora cooked for the family and for the farm hands. She remembered making 50 cents a week. During the war, from 1943 to 1945 she was an inspector at Briggs Defense Plant in Detroit. She was also one of the early "Tupperware Ladies" and still has every piece of Tupperware ever made.
Elnora had a life-long love of nursing. From 1940 to 1943 she worked at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. In Florida, she worked as a nurse aide from 1965 to 1970 at North Miami General Hospital and a private duty attendant from 1970 to 1984 where she gave patients care with compassion and dignity. Several years ago she wrote, "Even now when I am at a hospital, the smell, sounds, etc., make me wish I were working again. I don't know if I felt this was a calling, but I loved nursing."
Until just recently Elnora -- "Andy" to her friends, lived a very full, independent and active life; driving, shopping, and meeting with friends on a regular basis. She's never had a headache. Never had a toothache. Had all her own teeth. And, until a couple of months ago, would sit cross-legged, yogi-style in bed every morning while reading the Miami Herald.
"Andy" was a kind-hearted, gentle spirit who many thought was special. She was blessed with good friends (some friendships going back 60+ years) and neighbors who loved her, keeping in touch frequently.
