Gwendolyn attended Crispus Attucks Elementary & High School in Dania; she graduated from Booker T Washington High School in Miami, FL. She also attended Xavier University School of Medical Technology, New Orleans, LA, graduating with honors in the field of Pathology.
Gwen was married to the late SGM Ed Smith, Jr and from that union she had only one child, her endearing daughter Rosalind Smith.
Gwen had an extensive career in the medical profession, which she loved. For many years she worked in Los Angeles, California at John Wesley Hospital & Luis Pasteur Hospital and also at Touro Infirmary, New Orleans, LA.
My mom loved gardening, as she had THE green thumb. She also loved sewing and had a compassionate heart for animals. Her daily devotional consisted of reciting the Rosary, attending daily mass and watching Mother Angelica on ETWN.
During the later part of 2016, my mom's health began to deteriorate. Since she was all alone in New Orleans, I convinced her to sell her home and move back to Florida so she could be with family, friends and loved ones, which she did in August of 2017.
Gwendolyn was called home by her Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 19, 2017.
She leaves behind to mourn, her father Matthew Puryear, 101 years young, of Port St Lucie; her beloved daughter Rosalind Smith, Dania, FL; grandsons La Terrell Smith, Dania; FL and Sean McCutcheon, Los Angeles, CA; and a granddaughter Rosalind McCutcheon , Dania, FL. She also leaves nine great - grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a host of cousins and friends.
