Service EulogyHello my name is Mark Lavallee and I was often mistaken for Joel's brother. I had a chance to talk to some of us in the lobby, we all seemed to be saying the same things, that we did not want to be here, this is difficult and that Joel was so young. Pastor Bob, Kenny Mayberry and I all seem to have the same message tonight. Though we don't want to be here, we are here to support each other through this difficult time. Tonight I will share with you some of Susan Mayberry's thoughts as well as Kenny's as I spoke with them earlier as I prepared this. I don't want to miss anything so I'll use these notes. (prepared remarks)Tonight we come together to celebrate and honor our friend Joel's life. He made celebrating and honoring his life so incredibly easy. Joel was known for his outstanding friendly nature, his selfless dedication to his family and friends, especially his long time, much loved hospital family. I've spent the last week reminding myself of where Joel's greatness came from. I'd like to share with you some of those thoughts tonight. As I wrote these thoughts I realized there were many lessons for me to remember about how I should be living my life and what really matters in my life. Celebrations of life can really be eye opening this way.As a twenty something Joel's selflessness was strongly developed. Joel lived in a very humble one room apartment on US-1 in Hollywood. When he was in the middle of his electronics engineering technology degree pursuit he chose to put his student career on hold so that he could help his cousin Nancy negotiate her end of life journey. Nancy had cancer, and she also had a daughter Alicia. For two years I watched Joel struggle greatly both emotionally, academically, and probably financially too. By the end of these two years of caregiver his emotional state was much less than when I first met him. I could see that he is a soul that had the biggest heart and I understand how seeing suffering, pain and loss can damage a person. Joel did this difficult work and this is when I learned that Joel is a very rare, selfless, loving, caring, dedicated person that we are all proud to call our friend. A great example of kindness and this is one of the many reasons why we all love him.

Eulogy these two posts are in reverse order, this is the second half of two. I know with certainly that his greatest source of accomplishment and pride was his son Kenny. His love and affection for Kenny was his greatest accomplishment. He humbly did not take credit for Kenny's successes, but Joel was always very ready to share with you about Kenny's many accomplishments. Kenny now attends Nova University School in Davie, it is a coveted college preparatory school that he thrives in. Kenny is currently taking 4 advanced placements classes, and well positioned to attend an Ivy league college if he chooses to do so. Kenny and Joel had an extremely close bond. It was clearly communicated that Joel would do anything for him. I've gotten to know Kenny over the years and its clear to me why Joel was so proud and close with his son. As a 16 year old he is wise beyond his years. He quickly took the roll of his fathers healthcare advocate, through the 13 days of awareness of his serious health problems. Kenny was asking the doctors and nurses questions, working diligently to create peace and comfort for Joel, but what impressed me most of all was Kenny's ability to exercise emotional intelligence and control. Kenny was not going to squander any time that he could spend with his father in his last days and he did not. I offered to take him out and to get away from what I knew was a setting that was difficult and uncomfortable at times. Kenny graciously explained to me that he would have plenty of time to deal with the discomfort of his situation later in his life, but for now he needed to spend all the time he could with his dad. Kenny was easily able to speak the words that some boys and men struggle with. Kenny told his dad many times a day that he loved and cherished him. Kenny knew his dad was selfless and dedicated to him, and he demonstrated these qualities to Joel very clearly also.Susan shared with me some of her thoughts so these are her words not mine. Susan pursued Joel for about a year and Joel being busy with finishing school was slow to see her interest and attraction. When they did have their first date, one that I was double dating with them, it was a magical day for them both. Susan was star struck and immediately sensed Joel's kindness and caring towards her, we all enjoyed a day of fishing in Key Largo then a nice meal at Alabama Jack, and finally a romantic sunset on the card sound road bridge. They both have that same strong sense of attraction for each other, that attraction that new lovers have. Joel was the best highlight of her life, he gave her best gift ever, their son Kenny and Joel was truly the love of her life. Joel and Susan's love and commitment to each other was inspiring. I remember how happy I was for him on his wedding day, we celebrated in grand from at West Lake Park. Connecting with Susan was the best thing that ever happened to Joel. Joel went from living in a tiny shoebox apt to a nice apartment and finally a home filled with love and maintenance projects that were always behind. When Kenny was born, he ended up in the NIC U, Susan was also sick from child birth. Joel had a Polaroid camera and took a photo of new baby Kenny every hour so that Susan could see him and bond with him. He did this for two days. My sides would often hurt from all the laughing at his quirky sense of humor and his harmless usually self-deprecating pranks he pulled. He collected and delivered the funniest jokes I had ever heard. We shared our glory days stories in high school, he was a McArthur High grad me a South Broward. I was surprised how similar our stories and experiences were, we even went to some of the same parties. Joel would always be available to help me with my life's projects, I remember moving into my first apartment he was there with his pickup truck to help. I ended up scratching his window tint in his truck, he did not mind the damage I had done nor the sore back from moving a couch up a set of unfriendly stairs. Since then I have learned to not be cheap and hire professionals to move the furniture.  One of Joel's many talents was in his ability to connect with people. I've watched him bring many people together and several romantic matches were formed. He introduced me to several great people that later became my girlfriend over the 26 years I had known him. This was because Joel was my social connection to the world. He introduced me to all of his friends at Memorial Regional, I was Joel's guest for many of the Memorial company picnics, and end of the year holiday party. He made fast friends with my smaller circle of friends, and we all enjoyed fun times together. He connected my very new and humble business to his hospital and that launched our entry into the healthcare industry. I am so very grateful for this initial introduction from Joel. He is the largest single reason for my company's success, and I will never forget this. I believe there is a gift in this night that we all can take home with us and help us through the remainder of our lives. The gift is the good example Joel made for us. He lived his life where he valued friendships and family. He left us all with a warm blanket of friendship and closeness. He let the people who loved him know that he loved them too. I ask myself how I can make the future brighter with out my dear friend in my life. The answer is crystal clear to me, it is to live my life like Joel did, warm and connected. To let the people who loved him know that he loved them too. I will honor Joel by remembering how fun loving, life affirming he was, and to live my best life, filled with joy and kindness, all in his memory. To live my life with kindness and love and to try to be selfless like our dear friend Joel was. We celebrate your life Joel with great enthusiasm, you will be missed dearly but you will live on in our hearts minds and actions. We love you Joel

Susan, This is Lynne's Mom. I was so sorry to hear about Joel. My heart and love goes out to you and your son.I never got to meet Joel but I was told he was a wonderful man.My prayers are with you and always will be, you were the greatest angel that came into my life when I was so sick. And you were so good to my family during that time. I only wish I could have been there to share your heartache. Susan God will help you get through this and keep you strong. My sincerest condolences to the Mayberry family. Joel was there for me many, many years ago when I needed a friend to lean on with my father's death. He was one of the sweetest people I had ever met. I wished I had known he was ill. I will always have fond memories of our days working in transportation together. He will definitely be missed.

Joel was such a big part of our child rearing years here on Harding St. Always respectful and sweet with us. And I don't know what we would have done if he hadn't hunted down the huge bullfrogs in our yard one summer and disposed of them for us. I never asked how he disposed of them! God bless you, Ken and Mary as you go through the most difficult thing a parent can experience. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, David and Joel's wife and son.

When it comes to dedication,I don't think I know anybody that defines that better than JOEL did. He was dedicated to Susan and Kenny and to his job at Memorial. He was a sweet,funny good man, and will be missed so very much.....

I too am shocked at the news, my heart, my prayers goes out to the Mayberry family, I had the privilege of working with is wife Susan at Memorial West and I have met Kenny and Joel a couple time, such a beautiful, loving family. I didnt know Joel, for that long of a time, but I will agree, to the fact, that I have never seen a more dedicated family man...especially when it comes to making his wife Susan chilly ever week..:-) I remember Susan always use to brag how her husband makes the best chilly ever! he knew how much she loved it, and made sure she had it every week! I am so shocked at this news. My thoughts and prayers, along with the entire Memorial Healthcare System Compliance and Internal Audit Department, are with you all during this most painful time. I have had so many interactions with Joel over the years and he ALWAYS had a smile on his face and positive thoughts along with his can do work ethic. He will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Mayberry family...So heart breaking to loose such a wonderful person. He loved his family and would talk with me about his wife,son and his family. He was so very proud of Kenny....a very proud father... Hold onto the memories...RIP dear friend

To all the Mayberry family, my sincerest condolences on Joel's passing. I am stunned to say the least. My memories of Joel are all of a time when our lives were simple and mostly carefree, and Harding St was our universe; riding our bikes, playing kick the can, arguing about rock bands, picking on each other relentlessly. Ken and Mary, I so appreciate all the time I spent in your home and your pool and your refrigerator, and the friendship Joel and I had those years. I wish all of you peace as you grieve for losing him way too young.

I, like many others are in complete shock over this news, especially when I just saw him a couple weeks ago..it's absolutely heart breaking. Joel was such a great and funny guy..and everytime I would run into him when I'd go to Regional.. we'd catch up on the family. Susan and Kenny my heart aches for you..I can only imagine what you're both going through. I pray that time does heal you and all of us who knew and loved Joel. He will be missed greatly. God Bless!

So very sorry to hear of Joel's passing. Always a smile, photos of his son and updates as he grew up. Will miss him and his visits to Labor and Delivery. A true gentleman and a pleasure to work with.

My sincere condolences to the Mayberry family. I have known Joel for over 16 years. We bonded as we had are sons about the same time. We shared pregnancy stories as we both had a difficult pregnancy. Throughout the years we always asked how each others family was. Joel was a gentle soul, always had a smile and was excellent at his job. He will be missed.
