

Born on January 4, 1942, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Joseph was the beloved son of Durasma Lafortune and Euphosia Aupont. He attended some of Haiti’s finest schools, where he developed a strong sense of discipline, curiosity, and purpose—qualities that guided him toward a career in medicine and education.
Joseph was united in marriage to his devoted wife, Aline Eugene, in Miami, Florida. Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and service to others. Their shared vision led to the founding of the Caribbean Training Education Center (CTEC), which later evolved into Green Cross Home Care Services. Through this work, Joseph extended care and dignity to countless individuals and families.
Dr. Lafortune was known not only for his dedication as a physician and educator, but also for his compassion, generosity, and quiet strength. He was deeply committed to serving his communities in both Haiti, Jamaica, and Florida, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer guidance. Dr. Joseph Lafortune was a dedicated physician, lifelong scholar, and visionary educator whose work spanned continents and touched countless lives within the Haitian, Hispanic/Latino and Caribbean community. He really had a flare for building personal relationships to enhance people’s lives. His love for learning and commitment to expanding his medical expertise took him to many places, including New York, Winnipeg, Mexico, Florida, and Haiti.
He brought compassion, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to advancing medical care in every community he served. Throughout his career, he was consistently recognized with the highest honors from his supervisors, a testament to his clinical excellence, integrity, and tireless work ethic. Driven by a deep belief in the power of knowledge to transform lives, Dr. Lafortune founded JLF University to expand access to education in the health sciences. His legacy endures through the many students he inspired and the global impact of his service and leadership.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Durasma and Euphosia; his brother, Nicolas; and his son, Wally.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and service. Dr. Lafortune is survived by his beloved wife, Aline; his daughter, Hansje, and her husband, Fabrice; and his sons, Karl, Alix, and Jhoe. He also leaves behind his niece, Sonie, and his cherished grandchildren, Shakira, Tahj, Andre, Kianna, and Jhene, all of whom have brought him great pride and joy. He will be deeply missed by his extended family of inlaws, nieces, nephews, colleagues, and many dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 8th, from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9th, at Saint Bartholomew’s Church in Miramar, Florida, with Father Didi officiating. The committal service will follow at Fred Hunter’s Hollywood Memorial Gardens, 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, Florida, 33024. Arrangements are entrusted to Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home.
