After completing his education at Bhavatsinhji High School, Kishor pursued further studies at MP Shah Medical College in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Upon graduation, he married Veena Mansuk Jobanputra, and together they built a beautiful life in Rajkot, where Kishor practiced anesthesiology while Veena managed their household. In 1975, shortly after emigrating to the United States, he briefly lived in Chicago with Kishor’s loving sister, Nalini Lakhani, for six months. Kishor then moved to New York City to begin his residency in Internal Medicine at Beekman Downtown in Lower Manhattan, with Veena joining him shortly after. During their time in Queens, New York, they welcomed two children, Ojus and Tejus Karia, who, along with their wives, Priyanka and Sapana, and the newest addition to the family, Ahaan Karia, will continue to carry on his legacy.
From a young age, Kishor had a deep passion for education. He loved playing the harmonica and flute in his spare time and enjoyed playing chess with his sister during summer vacations. His thirst for knowledge was insatiable, and he found immense joy in reading. His interests ranged from avidly following The Wall Street Journal and studying books on technical analysis to delving into the writings of renowned philosophers. Kishor was also a deeply spiritual person, involved for the past 25 years in a satsang group, where he explored the philosophy of “Who am I?”—a teaching by Attma Gyani, the spiritual guide of Mahatma Gandhi and Shrimad Rajchandra. He was a dedicated follower of Krishna’s teachings and was devoted to the teachings of Pandurang Shastri Athavale, the founding father of the Swadhyaya (self-study) movement, which integrates spirituality with social responsibility. Believing in lifelong learning and the importance of physical fitness, Kishor walked six miles daily and worked full-time until the day he was diagnosed. Additionally, he played volleyball every Sunday for over 25 years.
As the eldest in his family, Kishor dedicated his life to uplifting his family socioeconomically. He was a loving and devoted presence in the lives of all who knew him, especially his children. Kishor excelled in everything he did and will be deeply missed by all.
