The following tribute was written by Matthew, Larry’s grandson.
“Larry was my G-Pop, and for me, he was truly exceptional. The definition of exceptional is “unusually good; outstanding”. He was outstanding in his love and support for his family, and how he expressed himself around family and friends. He also was unusually good at having an eye for the stock market. Because of his interest in sharing his knowledge with me, he developed a friendly stock competition for the two of us. Three times a year, we would each pick a stock, and whose ever stock had the greatest gain was crowned the winner. G-Pop was a humble man, but when it came to our stock competition, he became a bit brazen. His goal was always for me to win, but when he won, he loved to rub it in. A few times, however, I was crowned the winner, and his pride in me never shined brighter.
G-Pop also cherished the relationship with his one and only daughter (my mom), Kimberly Stroup. They often spoke on the phone with one another weekly, and sometimes more often. To some, a phone call check-in with a parent is quick and to the point. To them, however, it was much more than that. They would talk for hours on end about life, where they were going, and where they wanted to be. That would carry over to when they would see each other in person as well. Their bond was everlasting and time was never an issue when they engaged in conversation. G-Pop was a role model and calming voice for my mom, and to everyone he knew. He was always around to offer his advice.
G-Pop’s favorite car, a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, perfectly embodied his persona and demeanor. No matter the occasion, G-Pop dressed in a collared shirt and slacks. Like the Corvette, he always looked clean, sharp, and dashing. Underneath the hood was a high class and well-oiled machine. Like that, underneath his looks, was a soft-spoken and classy gentleman. The Corvette is one of the most successful and accomplished cars in American history. That’s exactly how I want G-Pop to be remembered.” -- Matthew Stroup
