Ruby was fiercely protective of Lucille. Walking the way to and from primary school in Yallahs, other children would call Lucille Miss Baby. Ruby told her, your name is Lucille and only answer to that.
Lucille went on to Happy Grove HS where she excelled at her studies as well as track, field, and horsemanship. She was well-loved by many and was often cheered on by her batch mates, “Go Mackie go” during any competition.
After two years of courtship, Lucille married Magnus George Lawrence on March 4, 1946. The heart of her husband safely trusted in her. She did him good all the days of her life. She helped him build profitable businesses all their married lives from farming banana and coconut crops to Avon sales. Her hands were never idle, and strength and honor were her clothing.
Her husband was known in the gates when he sat among the elders as Justice of the Peace in Portland. How many times had she opened her mouth with wisdom and shared with him the law of kindness on her tongue.
Lucille and Magnus had twin girls on January 3, 1951. The girls were apples of her eye, and she was a doting and proud mother.
Lucille grew to be civic minded as her mother was and helped to build Jamaica Social Development Commission. She studied at Tuskegee Institute as well as the University of Edinburgh to enhance her knowledge and social work skill set. She made innumerable trips across the parish of Portland Jamaica making sure young mothers had the proper nutrition and hygiene practices to help their newborns grow healthy and strong. She also shared recipes for foods that were plentiful and helped homemakers ensure the health of their families.
Lucille maintained her industrious spirit as she migrated to the United States in 1977. She was a nanny all over New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. She later came to work At Beth Israel Hospital in Passaic, NJ as coordinator for the home health office of the hospital.
She retired and moved to Lauderhill, FL in 2001 where she enjoyed Island Queen dinners, weekend trips to Naples and singing in the choir on Sundays with her husband at St. Malachy Church in Tamarac.
Lucille predeceased her beloved husband Magnus on September 23, 2022. She leaves behind a niece and nephew, four granddaughters, two great grandsons, and many loved ones who praise her memory because she lived as a woman who feared the Lord.
