Matthew Hayes, 96, of Palm Bay, FL passed away 12/30/11. He was born in Stoughton, MA to James M. Hayes and Catherine McGlynn. Moved to Miami at the age of 10, where he resided until relocating to Palm Bay, FL in 1994. He boxed as an amateur then professionally for several years at a young age. Matthew married Rita A. Coakley, who predeceased him. Together they raised four children.
A mason by trade, he was a lifelong member of The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC), Local 7 of Miami, and Local 1 of Fort Lauderdale. His work included the building of concrete Liberty ships in Tampa, FL during World War II to the Towers of the Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Homestead, FL. He retired from Miami Dade Public Schools Maintenance Dept. in 1982.
He is survived by his children, Rita Lord (Linz), Barbara Sandberg, John M. Hayes (Jeanmaire), daughter-in-law, Martha Larson Hayes. 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his eldest son, Edward D. Hayes and son-in-law, Mark Sandberg.
He was known to all as a hard-working, loving, fair and gentle soul. His passing brings sorrow, but also great joy in remembrance of a long and fruitful life.
A memorial Mass and burial at St. Joseph Cemetary, Palm Bay, FL will be held at a later date.
