

Melville Steinberg Jr. (Poppi) passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 103 on February 24, 2020, surrounded by his family. Mel was a long-time resident of Teaneck, NJ and the co-owner of the Old Salt Seafood restaurant in Paramus and the Old Salt Chop House restaurant in Englewood Cliffs. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Elaine Salls Steinberg. He is survived by his two sons Dennis (Elaine) Steinberg of Centennial, Colorado and Jeffrey (Roberta) Steinberg of Hohokus, New Jersey, and 5 grandchildren; Lindsay(Patrick),Brett(Mariajose),Scott(Andria),Robyn(Michael),Erik(Suzanne) and 9 great grandchildren; Hannah ,Noelle, Brynn, Scarlett, Audrey, Max, Alexandra, Elliott and Miles
Mel was a veteran of World War II as a member of the 51st Engineering Battalion serving his country in Europe, and because of his service defending France, is a recipient of France’s Croix de Guerre. He spent the last 40 years as a resident of Pompano Beach, Florida.
Mel was an avid golfer and crafted needle point works for his family and friends until his 80’s. When he left the golf course, he started playing poker. He was playing every day enjoying the company of others while playing a game he loved. Mel played and won at poker up to the last few weeks of his life.
Mel will be remembered by those who loved him by his daily outfit of matching shirt and hat. He would leave the house always well dressed and wearing one of eleven colored hats. His grandchildren and great grandchildren would bet on which color Poppi would wear when they would see him.
One could only hope to live a life as fulfilling as Mel’s. A long, happy marriage, loving family and friends, and activities he enjoyed. He was a successful business man who continued to invest until his last days. His family thought he would live forever. We will always love you Poppi.
