Phillipa E. Baker Smith was born in the cool district of Daveyton, Manchester, Parish Jamaica to
Lillian & Phillip Baker on Dec 9, 1946, she was the 8th of 10 siblings. The Baker family is a very
close-knit family and Phillipa quickly became an intricate part. She often stood out because
she lived her life as she saw fit, she was very opinionated and outspoken, she was never one to
mince her words. She was a very caring person who would give her last to make sure
everybody was well taken care of. She was a strong member of the Baker girls, and everyone
knew she demanded respect.
Her academic journey began at Bellefield primary school where she developed a love of math.
She then continued her studies at Vere Technical High School, where she excelled in
accounting.
After school, she went on to work as a Bank Teller for Royal Bank in Mandeville, Jamaica for a
few years, she then moved on to National Commercial Bank in Falmouth, Jamaica. She took a
brief pause from banking when she was blessed with the birth of her son Phillip who was born
on February 9 th , 1982. Subsequently she went back to NCB where she remained until her
migration with her son Phillip to Miami FL in 1984.
Phil or Aunt Phil as she was affectionately known to her family met Lloyd Smith in 1988 in
Miami Fl, whom she married on July 5, 1989. She was quickly given a new moniker & was
affectionately referred to from that point as “Mommy P”. “Mommy P and Daddy Lloyd”
enjoyed a blissful marriage, filled with traveling, dancing, and making beautiful memories
throughout. One of her proudest memories was that Manufacturers Hanover’s Bank trusted
her with being one of the final employees to work in the Miami branch when it closed for good
in 1992.
She then decided to pursue a nursing career & made a seamless transition to Nursing in 1994
where she gave excellent care to pediatric patients. She took another brief pause in work
when disaster struck on April 30th, 2011, when her beloved son Phillip was called home to be
with the Lord. She went back to work later that year until her retirement in 2013. After
retirement she continued her pediatric expertise by doting & caring for her grandnephew
Maximo whom she loved unconditionally until she took ill in 2016 and could no longer do so.
Daddy Lloyd subsequently retired and lovingly cared & dedicated his life to caring for Mommy
P until her death. She will be missed!
