Dick was such an incredible human being. He was always so positive and giving to others. His community work volunteering at the Insight to the Blind, his spiritual devotion to God, his genuine interest in the well being of others, and his adoration of his loving wife are just a few of the attributes that made him such a remarkable person. Although Dick is no longer here to brighten our days with his cheerful voice, there is a part of him I hold dearly in my heart. He inspired me to be a more positive and giving person. I often think of his smiling face and am inspired to incorporate the upbeat personality, and caring nature, Dick exhibited into my life.My thoughts are with you, Jinni, as you proceed in the next chapter of your life. Yesterday I opened the email that spoke of Richard's passing. I wrote an immediate tribute, but as I looked at it again, I felt it was more about me than my dear friend. After last night's rest I want to try again. Before I begin may I say that if everyone had just one friend as Richard Ober was to me, this world would be a far more beautiful and peaceful place.As I am writing, a photograph of Richard looks at me and I recall, the last time I spoke with Richard, that I was so struck by the serenity all over his face. I believe now that our Lord was preparing him for his transition from earth to glory. There was a glow that I might think was almost angelic. Richard was a blessed friend, one who knew everything about me, yet loved and encouraged me all the more. This kind of sincere love almost defies explanation; it is a sincere love that can only exist within the pure truth that is Christ Jesus Himself.A very long time ago, in the early 70's, I contacted Richard who was the CEO of "Clearlight". I was doing slide shows in churches and I wanted to talk with Mr. Ober about upgrading my equipment. He would not take any payment. He gave of himself; something I learned over the years was the hallmark of his person. Over the years we shared often -- or emailed, then we SKYPEd. If I were to describe Richard in one sentence: He was the closest example of Jesus I have ever known. We talked often in those days, difficult for me, sometimes on into the night. His constant faith in Jesus buoyed me up: Ever the Encourager, never the critic. In the pages of my Bible are many dated notations that are marked as from R. Ober. Most were wonderful reminders of the promises from our heavenly Father. My recent novel, "The Congregation" came to life just because of Richard's encouragement. It was an eleven year effort. His life's example is woven between the threads of this book. I am a far different man because of Richard N. Ober. There is not a doubt in my mind that Jesus had much to do with placing Dick in my life. I needed a friend. He was that friend. And while I am telling of his love and encouragement; he loved his wife as I have never known a man to love. Even now, I look here at his picture and I see Jesus all over Richard's face.I feel certain that even now he may be saying: "Do not weep for me; I'm in the arms of my Savior, Jesus the Christ."Oh, the stories I could tell, the prayers we prayed together, the kindness from God that flowed thru Richard Ober to me. My heart is broken; yet my joy is complete that he ran the race, finished the course, and now receives heaven's applause: a good and faithful servant of the Lord.

Words fail to say how special Dick Ober was to me. I only knew him for the past 6.5 years but he made a profound impact on my life. As someone else has said, he was totally present in every conversation and made one feel as if they were the only person in the world at that moment.He taught me so many things about God and His love for us! I regret that we only spoke by phone a few times over the past year or so. I will miss him and the wisdom he shared greatly!To his family, I did not ever have the pleasure of meeting you but you were so special to him. He loved you so much and he spoke of you often. He would want me to say to you to be sure that you receive God's gift of grace through His Son, Jesus Christ and spend time getting to know the One he loved more than life itself. I pray God's love, grace, peace, and blessings over each of you!

Remembering our wonderful early years living in Boston and Cambridge, Jinni and Dick were undoubtedly our closest friends. We attended each other's weddings, and Jinni and Susan worked together at Curtis Publishing in the Statler Building. Every day was terrific fun sharing coffee breaks and lunch together. That close friendship has flourished for almost sixty years despite our different locations over the many years. It is with great sadness but wonderful memories that we say goodbye to Dick. Once I can get my breath I'll write more; but for now I can barely even think. What crushes my spirit is that for the past month I have yielded to my own concerns rather than SKYPE with Richard as my inner man told me to. What words can I write?Richard was my dearest friend in all the world. Bar none. From the early 70's until the present moment we shared. True words fail me. It is as if my heart was plucked from my chest. He knew me as no other person on the face of this earth; even with my failings. Richard believed in me as no one else ever did. Ever my encourager! He was brother, father, friend. As King David wept when Johnathan was killed in battle, so now I do weep because my most precious friend in all the world has gone on before. I know he is rejoicing with Jesus. But still it hurts so much. More later. Thank you so much for keeping me in the loop. Richard N. Ober is the closest image of Jesus on earth that I know. Christ was ever alive in Richard.

Uncle Dick was one of those men who, when in a conversation with him, would be fully IN the conversation with you. From my earliest memories, to my last, all-to-brief chat with him in Newport this past Fall, Dick always made you feel listened to, important, and was truly interested in what you had to say. I will miss his sense of humor, his laugh, his love for family, and his passion for conversation. My thoughts and condolences to Jinny, Scott, Marney and Mom.
