I AM Neza, one of the 27 nieces and nephews of my beloved aunt Jean. My mom was Shiran who was one of the eldest sibling of Jean.When I think of Jean, two words come to mind, compassion and respectJean impacted my life at an early age. I remember an aunt who would get down with us children when we vacationed in canji, Berbice irregardless of our age differences. She introduced me to the 80's culture, a time when rock and roll music prevailed. her love for bands like Creedance Clearwater Rivival, Led Zepplin, Santana, just to name a few provided me with an insight into this type of music that I grew to love. I was fortunate to live near to Jean in Jamaica where she was pursuing a career in Medicine and again in Ft Lauderdale. I came to know an aunt who had a great fund of knowledge, a creative mind, and a kind, caring and compassionate soul. I also discovered that to know Aunty Jean was to respect her first, then love her dearly, two traits that I also found exist within me. May Allah grant you peace and serenity and may your soul be at rest for eternity.On behalf of all of your nieces and nephews, We love you dearly and will miss you very very much. Go in peace our darling Aunty.

Jean as she was know in our family was someone I aspired to be like when I was growing up. She was my dad's younger sister and was studying medicine in Jamaica. She didn't come home often but her reputation as a maverick, trendsetter and overall rebel was legendary in the family. She wasn't your typical traditional female. She was the first person I knew that believed girls could do anything a boy could. Judo comes ro mind. She would take a tumble with the local boys much to the charigin of her younger brother, Uncle Kamal. I recall once she stood up to Uncle Boyo (her oldest brother in law) when she perceived that he was out of line. I remember the heated "debates" between her and Ma over fashion, music and curfew. She usually won or disregarded restrictions. In my eyes she was larger than life. Sadly, we never estatablished a close relationship as we didn't live in the same parts of the world (albeit briefly in Florida). But this I can say: she was a very private person in her later life but was extremely loyal and shared a close relationship with the Florida relatives. Jean probably never knew this but I took a page out of her book in crafting my life: independent and strong-willed. I always took it as a compliment whenever I was told I was just like Jean. Rest in peace dear aunt and may your stories continue to inspire future generations of girls in the family.
