Deat Laura, Thank you for letting us know about your Mom's passing. We received the phone message but are out of the country on the boat and have spotty internet coverage. If we were in town we certainly would have come to her Celebration of Life. Shirley was such a fun person and managed to keep her sense of humor despite the fact that she was not feeling well. We loved listening to her strong opinions about everything going on, from politics to neighborhood issues, as she would walk by the house with Mika. We will certainly miss her.Our sincerest condolences to you, for all you have done for her, and to your family. We know she must have enjoyed that 9 piece brass band. Karen ArangoI was the one in charge of Shirley's smile. As her Dental Hygienist for more than 20 years, I had the privilege of seeing her like clockwork, every 3 months. "Shirley you must be joking" I would say to her, and that would always get a laugh. I looked forward to seeing Shirley promptly at 1:15 in the afternoon. She was always early. I was sad when she announced that she wasn't going to be able to come to our new practice when we moved, as it was going to be too far, and she already was driving across town. Then I was delighted, when she did come to see us in the new Miller and Korn practice. Dr. Berger was always her favorite though, as he was the one that treated her from the beginning. She missed him dearly, after he retired. In all of those years, she only forgot about one appointment. She was very ill at that point, but irked that she had forgotten. We talked about all kinds of things. No subject was taboo. Laura and Lindsey were in the conversation a lot, and she was so proud of the whole family. She was passionate about politics, and was always up on current events. Her sense of humor was infectious, and that hour always went too fast. I was touched by her strength and courage in facing her illness. She even had an upbeat way of imagining her funeral. Surely, Shirley, you were not joking

I'll always remember Shirley's big smile and the way she welcomed everyone into her home with such grace and charm. I loved how she loved her dogs, the Orioles, her 5 p.m. Scotch and, of course, Christmas. She decked the halls inside and out - with her life-sized Santa always holding court on the pool deck. Our "day after" Christmas game day (girls only) was always so full of fun and hijinks- those are  days and memories I will cherish forever. I was lucky to have had Shirley in my life- God bless her now and always. We have a new guardian angel watching out for all of us!Love, Leisa

I came to Shirley's home the first time back in 1997 as the new girlfriend of her brother, Otis. Knowing that I wasn't the first girlfriend he had brought "home" for the family to "meet and greet", I was very nervous. We had driven down to Fort Lauderdale from Orlando and were expected in late afternoon. As we neared our destination, my nervousness was showing, so we hopped over to the intracoastal waterway and stopped at one of Otis' favorite restaurants for a libation to calm my fears. After one - maybe two - drinks, we headed "home" to Shirley's where the clan was waiting for us. I shouldn't have been so nervous as I was welcomed with open arms complete with hugs and kisses. I knew I was truly "home". From that moment on, Shirley's home was a welcoming place for us whenever we wanted to stop by. Shirley became not only my "sister-in-law", but she became the older "sister " I never had. We could tell each other anything - and we did. She would offer advice and suggestions, but she never "preached ". Her home became a second home and we loved spending time with her - as everyone did. Shirley - I will miss you terribly, from making Otis his Taylor pork roll in the mornings, to watering each and every plant on your lanai on Saturday mornings, to cleaning out your birdbath, to enjoy reading the newspapers, to walking Mika (and Bronnie before Mika), to going out for lunch or dinner with you, to watching you work your puzzles, to be amazed at all your holiday decorations, to enjoying your famous Christmas eggnog and cookies, and on and on....And speaking of Mika.... Shirley, I promise to love and take care of your most prized possession - your Mika, who was your beloved companion for the last four + years. Otis and I know how much you cared for this little white shadow of yours who you saved and who saved you. We will tenderly care for her and give her a happy life until she joins you in heaven. So, thank you dear "sister" for our time together. I will always miss you and think of you with much love. Kathy

Her smile was big, but her heart was bigger still. You couldn't walk into Shirley's house and not be greeted with open arms, a pearly white grin, and some of her sage - albeit sassy - wisdom. An example of such wisdom was that one must always discern one's scotch and/or rum by their unique colors. "The color can tell you a lot about the quality of a drink, Erin," she once said. She lived her life to the fullest, was always there when you needed a laugh, or wanted to hear a good story. But it was the holidays that I will remember and treasure the most. Girls only "Day After Christmas" game days were filled with love, plenty of laughs, lots of friendly (and sometimes not-so-friendly) competition, homemade cookies and eggnog, Santa singing on the back porch, and Shirley - there to join the fun and roll her eyes at our shenanigans. These days will carry on, and we will forever have our newest guardian angel smiling down on us. Love you, Shirley. I'll bake your cookies and make your eggnog every year. And I'm sure we'll enjoy a perfectly-colored scotch together some day.Love,Erin

Shirley met life head on and lived it fully. I so admired and loved that about her. An "all weather sailor" (most of the time!)--give her a scotch, a card game belowdecks, Joe at the conn on the Belle Star and all was good. Sophisticated lady, simple pleasures! She could be flinty eyed one minute peering over her newspaper and talking to me about the state of the world. The next minute she might as easily turn to mush, and those blue eyes would turn misty with pride over family, friends (or one of her classic movies.) A daughter herself of a dad --and later a husband in Joe--who served with the Greatest Generation, Shirley's compass bearings were forged in a different time. Resourceful, independent, caring, tough, big-hearted --asking no favor but always willing to give one. Mourn, perhaps, that they truly do not make them like her anymore. Then with our misty eyes (what better way to see her reflection) smile and celebrate Shirley and her singular life that illuminates ours....forever. Love,Michael

Just a little over two weeks ago, I spent a Friday morning sitting in her kitchen talking about life (mostly hers), laughing, and listening to old records. Shirley has been a presence throughout my entire life, but it wasn't until I began to enter adulthood that our relationship really strengthened. I never left one of our get togethers without a smile on my face. Her sense of humor and perspective on life enchanted everyone around her.   Her painting of a Spanish matador is displayed proudly in my bedroom. I told her this during our last visit. We were discussing the spectacle when she informed me of what really occurs at a bull fight. I never knew the fate of the bull. She was shocked that I didn't know and began to question her facts. Immediately, we investigated. Long story short, she was right. I was horrified. And we both learned that on rare occasion when a bull shows exceptional skill, the animal is pardoned and lives out its days on the bull ranch where it was raised.   I'll miss these quirky moments I always shared with Shirley. She was truly one of a kind.   Love you, Shirley. I'll catch you on the flip side.

If I had kept notes over the years of all the special memories connected with Shirley (and Joe), it would fill their swimming pool.Shirley's friendship will always be treasured because her enthusiasm for life was contagious. We loved a good laugh -- among our favorites: the combined celebration of our 50th birthdays when our children concocted a cake that was designed to hold 100 candles! (We blew them all out.)Those same side-by-side birthdays (Nov. 4th and 6th) were like holding lottery tickets while awaiting the birth of grand-daughter, Lindsay -- I won! My Sister Shirley -Shirley and I enjoyed a special relationship since childhood, and during most of my 77 years, we have been looking after each other.She was a confidante and friend, mentor, guidance counselor and to me an absolute compassionate rock. We went thru divorces, family deaths, job changes, illnesses, and numerous other critical situations together. We handled the strong troubling winds and dealt with anything that came our way. Working together through all of these challenges made us stronger and created an unbreakable sibling bond between us.The good times far exceeded the bad and we enjoyed a lifetime of laughter and precious days together. I am a much better person thanks to my loving sister. I will miss Shirley terribly but am very happy she is at peace and without pain.She has now joined her husband, Joe, and all of the other deceased family members and friends in heaven.May God be with you, Shirley. With every holiday decoration I ever put up, every Scrabble tile I ever play, every glass of Scotch I ever drink, every plant I ever tend to, every family history story I ever tell ... Our Sunday swims, the chats around the kitchen table, her love of musicals( like mine), the never ending list of games we played, the Christmas traditions I will treasure forever, her laugh and since of humor, her love for life and all around her... these are the memories of Shirley I will hold in my heart forever. I will miss Shirley and Mika very much. I knew Shirley since 1977 as a member of the Hospital Personnel Association. When I met my husband I discovered he worked with Shirley's husband Joe. The four of us went out together and when we married Joe was an usher at our wedding. More recently I would take my dog, Dude, over to Shirley's at 5pm for Happy Hour and the dogs had treats (not cocktails). She taught me a lot and I will miss her dearly. Mary Rogers
