Shirley Scott Caldwell, 82, who spent the majority of her life in her beautiful Rio Vista home, passed there Sunday night, as she had wanted, peacefully and surrounded by family and her angel dog, Mika. As her brother Otis said as she was departing, "Shirley, like George Bailey, you had a wonderful life!"
Mom was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of an Army Colonel, so the family moved frequently, with her formative years spent in the Baltimore area. Friends and family know her passion for history, and she regaled all with her endless stories. Mom had a green thumb and could make anything grow. She loved tending to her gardens and had an enthusiastic passion for life, her 5:00 daily scotch, and a well-placed Scrabble tile.
The majority of her career was spent in hospital management, as Director of Personnel and later as Risk Manager at Plantation General Hospital. Her countless honors included President of the Personnel Association of Broward County in 1977.
Mom was loved by all who knew her and now joins in Heaven her husband Joseph Caldwell, sister Theodora "Terry" Scott, brother Robert Scott, stepson Thomas Caldwell, and parents Otis Sr. and Ethel Scott.
Left to treasure her memory are brother Otis "Otey" Scott and sister-in-law Kathy; daughter Laura Williams; step-daughter Carey (and Cam) Wiley; niece Susan (and Peel) Chronister; grandchildren Lindsay Williams, Katie (and Jeff) Gottlieb, Mark Caldwell, and Clayton and Carter Cullen; and great-grandchildren Jake and Lilah Gottlieb. Mom, we will all hold you in our hearts forever!
This tribute to Mom will also run in the Wednesday, May 31 Sun-Sentinel. You all know how much Mom loved her daily papers!
Visitation and Service will be Saturday, June 3, from 10-11 a.m. at Fred Hunter's, 718 S. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, followed by a Committal Service at 11:45 a.m. at Lauderdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her favorite charity, Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, www.youthranches.org.
