William W. Combs

He was born January 20, 1920, in Statesville, NC to Dicie Combs. Bill was an electrician in the US Navy during World War II. He married Ruth Edith Anderson on January 25, 1947, and with her became a world traveler and supporter of many missionaries. He loved to document their vacations with pictures and presented slide shows to family and friends of their travels. They were happily married for 62 years until Ruth's death in 2009.

Bill was a commercial airline pilot for PanAmerican Airlines and retired as a Captain from Eastern Airlines in 1980. He loved to fly and continued to volunteer as a pilot for Wycliffe International for many years. Bill was a devoted member of Hollywood Hills United Methodist Church since 1964. He was active in the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class, Senior Ministry and Bible Study.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; mother, Dicie Combs; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Helen Combs; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Guy and Doris Gettys; and niece, Juanita (Combs) Ellis. He is survived by: nephew, Guy Gettys, Jr. (Jill); nieces, Dale Blodgett (Jim), Susan Harvey (Sid), Kay Lawing (Gerald) and Carol Thaxton; 10 grandnephews; 9 grandnieces; 1 great grandnephew; 1 great grandniece and many close family friends. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

A visitation will be held Thursday, January 10th, at 10 a.m. with a Funeral Service immediately following at 11 a.m. at the Hollywood Hills United Methodist Church, 400 N. 35th Avenue, Hollywood, FL 33021; 954-989-8304. Interment at Hollywood Memorial Gardens North, Hollywood, FL following church services.
