from an undiagnosed medical condition on October 11, 2016
in Pullman, WA. Alex graduated Cum Laude from Auburn University
in May, 2016 with a degree in Agricultural Science.
He was honored with a 2016 National Student Recognition Award
from the American Society of Agronomy. This society
recognizes outstanding seniors in Agronomy, Crop, and Soil Science
across the nation at 4-year universities. He was attending Washington
State University this fall as a graduate student with a focus on Wheat
Breeding and Research.
Alex lived life with zest and adventure. He had a passion for wanting to
feed the world and eliminate hunger. Alex spent two summers in China, a
country he grew to love, on a study-abroad program with Auburn. He also
spent time in Mexico learning about the links between agriculture and
nutrition in that country. Back home, Alex spent many hours at the Auburn
Food Bank Garden, toiling in the soil (even on game days!) so that others
could have food on their table. That garden was very special to Alex.
After traveling abroad, Alex realized how grateful he was to live in our
country, and he believed that the U.S. was the greatest country in the
world. He was in awe of the beauty here, and he was so fortunate to get to
see many stunning places. He traveled to Glacier National Park, the Rocky
Mountains, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Ranier,
and countless trails along the way. Alex was most at peace in nature and
on the trails.
Alex recently met and fell in love with a young lady from China, Qiong
Zhang. It is a beautiful love story that will always remain in our hearts.
Alex is survived by his mother, Sylvia Chapman (Steve); his father, Russell
Callaway; his sister, Callie Callaway; his grandparents, Melba and Hudson
Williams; and numerous loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be on Sunday October 30th at 2:00 p.m, with a memorial
service to follow at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to
the Auburn Food Bank Garden in memory of Alex Callaway, ℅
