November 22, 2014
Barbara Callaway Morgan entered this world October 8,1919 and began her life eternal November 22, 2014. She leaves behind her devoted children, Dale Morgan Miller (David), James Perry Morgan (Elaine), seven adoring grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Dr. Richard E. Morgan, Sr. (Judy), and a host of nieces and nephews. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of almost 69 years, Dr. Perry A. Morgan, Jr., her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Monroe Callaway, and her brother, James Monroe Callaway, Jr. (June).
In 1937, Barbara graduated from Ensley High School, having served as an officer in various organizations and clubs and was recognized for her academic excellence when tapped into the National Honor Society. Her higher education was completed in 1941 with a BS degree from Birmingham Southern College.
She became well known on the Hilltop, actively involved in her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, serving as President her Senior year. She chaired the Women's Division of the Executive Council, served as Vice President of both Mortor Board and the Pan Hellenic Council and was a member of Who's Who. Her induction into the musical honorary, Mu Alpha, recognized her beautiful soprano voice, which she joyfully shared on so many occasions.
Her gift of music was woven into the fabric of her life. While at Ensley High School she was actively involved in such Thespian productions as "Mr. Bob", "The Mikado" and "The Pirates of Penzance", where she played the role of Isabel. As a member of the BSC Choir and Theatre, she appeared in many performances, including playing the lead female role in the production of "Trial by Jury". She sang on stage at the Alabama and Lyric Theatres and was one of the "Three Little Pigs" , sponsored by Zeiglers Meat Company, who sang weekly on radio station WBRC. She was always very proud to say "And we got paid for it, too"! Her name appeared on numerous wedding programs as the soloist and the bride's favorite selection was often "Because"! For years she was an active member of the Sanctuary Choir, the Women's Chorus and, more recently, she blessed the lives of shut-ins and those in retirement homes as a member of Trinity's Senior Choir . Oh! how she loved to glorify the Lord with her voice! Her servant heart provided other avenues for her to share her faith.
In her 60+ years as a member of Trinity, Barbara served in many ways, including leadership roles as President of the United Methodist Women and Circle Leader. She prepared and served meals once a month at the Fire House Shelter, visited church members in the hospital and , as a member of the Flower Committee, created beautiful arrangements for the altar. She was also a charter member of the Trinity exercise group which she credited for her agility and strength.
In her spare time, she enjoyed her involvement with friends in the Merry Diggers Garden Club, Bridge Club and the Jefferson County Medical Auxiliary. She also loved traveling with her precious "Pete", whether overseas, camping in their RV or a quick trip to the cabin at the river.
But more than anything, her family was her greatest love. She would often remark "How wonderful it is that we are all right here in town"! We have all been blessed by her faithful example, her graciousness, her wisdom, her wit, her warmth, her smile, her joy. She leaves us with a treasure chest of memories to be cherished forever.
To her caregivers over the last months, we are thankful. But most especially, we are grateful to Anniece for embracing our loved one with her compassion, encouragement, loyalty and joyful spirit.
Visitation will be at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL on Tuesday, November 25th from 12:00-1:00 with the Service, conducted by Rev. Andy Wolfe, to follow. A family graveside service will be held at Elmwood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Trinity United Methodist Church.
