Charles Edward Shelby

October 7, 1931 – September 13, 2014

age 82 of Hoover, AL. passed away unexpectedly Saturday, September 13. Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 53 happy years, Winifred Little Shelby; cherished son and daughter; Michael Shelby of Hoover and Lisa Shipman (Scott) of Haleyville; precious grandchildren Shelby, Ezekiel, and Katherine Shipman and treasured friend Anthony Mitchell. Charles was preceded in death by parents; Leonard and Kathleen Shelby and brother, Joe Shelby.

Charles retired from The Birmingham News after 45 years of dedicated service. He was a decorated Korean War veteran, awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After retiring Charles enjoyed volunteering with Hoover Historical Society and under Jack Crouch’s leadership was instrumental in building and maintaining the Hoover Folklore Center located behind Bluff Park Elementary School.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 20, at 10:00 am, with Memorial Service following at 11:00 am, Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church, 3139 Cahaba Heights Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35243.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Charles may be made to Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice. A private interment to follow at Bluff Park United Methodist Church.
