

Claude Duval Shelby, age 93 of Birmingham, Alabama died Saturday, November 19, 2011. He was born on March 31, 1918 in Birmingham, Alabama. Claude was a graduate of Phillips High School and spent most of his career in the iron and steel industry, working for Jim Walter Resources and U.S. Pipe and Foundry. He was an avid outdoorsman and a devoted father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents Claude D. Shelby and Mary Townes Shelby, his wife of 65 years Helen Eugenia Boni Shelby and his sister Margaret Shelby Norman. Claude is survived by his brother Patrick A. Shelby of Birmingham, AL; his sister Mary Elizabeth Shelby Goldman of Gulf Shores ,AL; his daughter, Bonnie G. Shelby Shefferly (George D.) of St. Clair Shores, MI; his sons: C. Henry Shelby (Patricia L.) of St. Augustine, FL, David Duval Shelby (Jamie Stephenson) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Birmingham, AL and, and Joseph M. Shelby (Gail A. ) of Bon Secour, AL; 7 grandchildren: G. David Shefferly, Phillip M. Shefferly, John C. Shefferly, Daniel J. Shefferly, Patrick M. Shelby, Kristen B. Shelby, Anastasia D. Shelby and by his 7 Great Grandchildren; Patrick T. Shelby, Alex J. Shelby, Colin D. Shelby, Adam T. Shefferly , Libby G. Shefferly, Sadie J.Shefferly, and James M. Shefferly. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Shelby’s caregivers including Joyce Vickers L.P.N., Always There, Evercare Hospice and the staff of Mount Royal. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, November 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Bob Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of donations, flowers will be welcome.
