

Donald Charles Elliott, 81, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at peace and with the promise of the Lord’s salvation. He was the son of the late Clyde Charles and Mamie Lou Knighton Elliott. Mr. Elliott was born in Marion, NC on October 29, 1934.
Mr. Elliott was a football and baseball letterman at Marion High School, class of 1953. He worked his way through college and graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Business Transportation in 1958.
Mr. Elliott was a proud Patriot of the U.S. Army. He was a Specialist – 3 Tank Commander and served from 1954 to 1956. He had a 36 year career and retired as a Regional Manager after 25 years of service with the trucking company Overnite. He managed numerous branches throughout the Southeast. The South Carolina Trucking Association awarded him the “Man of The Year in South Carolina Transportation” in 1973. He held every office in the Atlanta Transportation Club and served as President for 2 years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dora Rutherford Elliott; daughters Donna (Jim) Whatley, Denise (Rick) Haney; son Darrin Scott (Julie) Elliott Sr.; brother Douglas Elliott; sister Linda Elliott; granddaughters Rene Whatley Foreman, Christina Lorraine Haney, Caroline Michelle Haney and Georgia Marie Elliott; grandsons James Hartwell Whatley III, Darrin Scott Elliott Jr., Connor Lee Whatley and David Charles Elliott; 6 sister-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Elliott is scheduled for 3:00PM, Sunday, January 10 at his home church, Mountain Brook Baptist. A visitation will follow the memorial service in Hudson Hall. The internment will be at 10:15AM, Monday, January 11 at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers the family request friends and family donate to one of his favorite charities, the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Salvation Army or the
American Heart Association.
