Dr. Harris was born on June 13, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from West End High School. Following graduation, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama. He was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and remained actively involved with the organization throughout his life. He later served honorably in the United States Army before obtaining a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Harris retired from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center before later working with the Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, where he helped promote tourism in the city he loved.
A longtime resident of Vestavia Hills, member of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, and member of Vestavia Country Club, Dr. Harris was an avid golfer in his younger years and a diehard Alabama football fan throughout his life. He loved a good cigar and treasured time spent visiting with his many friends at cigar shops around Birmingham and at his second home in Destin, Florida. No matter where he was, he drew a crowd with his outgoing personality, quick wit, and endless collection of jokes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Suzanne Corretti Harris; his sons, Edward Alun Harris III (“Tripp”) (Sonya) of Birmingham, Alabama, and William Corretti Harris (“Corey”) (Ashley) of Tampa, Florida; and his beloved grandchildren, Barrett, Emma Grace, Ward, Liam, and Scott, all of whom he loved dearly and of whom he was immensely proud.
A celebration of Alun’s life will be held on June 15th, 2026 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dr. Harris’s honor be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
