

Elizabeth Gore Biggs, 83, of Homewood, widow of William D. Biggs, died on January 4 of complications from a cerebral aneurysm. She was born and raised in Tupelo, Miss., surviving the famous tornado of 1936 (along with fellow Tupelo native Elvis Presley). She attended Huntingdon College and Birmingham-Southern, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. For many years, she assisted her first husband, Martin Westgate McWhorter, as his secretary at the McWhorter Engineering Company and co-wrote the articles he published in Skin Diver magazine; later, she ran a babysitting service. In addition to raising three children, she was a skilled bridge player, a pianist, an enthusiastic water skier well into middle age, and an avid follower of professional tennis. She was a member of Crestline Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Survivors include two sons, Craig McWhorter (Carol) of Birmingham and Stephen McWhorter (Lorraine) of Macon, Georgia; a daughter, Diane McWhorter of Cambridge, Mass.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood on Saturday at 1 p.m. They family will receive friends one hour before.
