

Mary Elizabeth Ligon Dawson passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016. She was 95 years old. Elizabeth was born in Union City, Georgia, to James Olin and Mary Lovie Wall Ligon. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Dorothy Burns and her brothers, Olin, Waylon, Charles, Paul and Albert Ligon.
Elizabeth married Roy K. Dawson December 27, 1941. They were a devoted couple for over 74 years. He survives along with daughter, Jeanne Elizabeth Dawson Jeff (David) of Birmingham, son, John R. Dawson (Debra) of Carmel, Indiana, and niece “second daughter” Mary Bonnie Burns Murray (Michael) of Mt Brook. Elizabeth was a wonderful grandmother to Stuart David Jeff (Allison) of Baltimore, Maryland, Rachael Elizabeth Jeff Abercrombie (Keith) of Birmingham, Laura Marie Jeff McFee (John) of Montgomery and Mary Whitney Dawson of Chicago, Illinois and great-grandmother to Morris, Nelly Marie and Joanna Betty Jeff of Baltimore and Libby Dawson McFee and Grace Gibbons McFee of Montomery, and aunt to John Michael Feagin Murray of Los Angeles, California.
Elizabeth was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class. She loved Sunday school and the wonderful trips she and Roy took with the Trinity Senior Adult group.
She was a livelong Methodist and was a member of West Woodlawn Methodist Church for over 40 years and the Woodlawn Methodist Church where she and Roy had leadership positions for nearly 30 years.
Elizabeth graduated from Gibson School in 1935 and Woodlawn High School in 1939. She has served on the reunion committees of both schools for years. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.
Elizabeth was an excellent cook and a great hostess. She loved preparing family meals with everyone's favorite dish. She loved Christmas, Easter, weddings and ALL babies but especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But most of all, she loved Roy. Their 74 years of marriage were an example of love and devotion that is unmatched. When circumstances forced them to be apart, he visited her everyday. Their last days together were spent in a shared room at St. Martins in the Pines. She died with him holding her hand. Elizabeth will be missed by all who knew and loved her, but most especially by Roy.
Visitation for Elizabeth will be Wednesday, May 25, 10:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood with the service to follow at 11:00 am. Burial at Forest Hill will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.
