Elizabeth Almon Hamby was born January 9, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia to Leonard and Mabel Almon. After graduation from North Avenue Presbyterian School (NAPS), she went to and graduated from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
She was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA for 68 years. A few of the areas she served in were: United Methodist Women, teaching 7th grade Sunday School for many years, Vacation Bible school, and a member of the Official Board. While in junior high school, Elizabeth met the love of her life, Quillian Pattillo Hamby, at Grace Church. She was in the Charles Hope Sunday School class from the time she was a newly wed until she moved from Atlanta, GA to Birmingham, AL.
Other interests she participated in: Dental Wives Auxiliary, neighborhood garden club, President of the Christian Home Club, volunteer at Wesley Woods/Bud Terrace Retirement Community and a volunteer for school PTA. In her early years she taught pre-school and kindergarten. In her later years she worked in her husband’s dental office as his bookkeeper and receptionist.
When Quillian retired in 1991 they moved from Atlanta, GA to Birmingham, AL to be near their children and grandchildren. In Birmingham, Elizabeth was a member of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, and volunteered over 2,000 hours with the Brookwood Medical Auxiliary (Brookwood Hospital). She loved playing bridge with her friends, and played well into her 90’s. Elizabeth enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Quillian P. Hamby, Jr. Her grandson, Michael David Luketic, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her 4 children; Dianne Hamby Luketic (Davor), Pat Hamby (Marcia), Nancy Hamby Driskill - all of Birmingham, AL and Leonard Hamby (Sally) of Tampa, FL ; 9 grandchildren Beth Luketic Collins (Bob), Christopher Luketic (Lindsay), Brent Hamby (Cindy) all of Birmingham, AL, Bryant Hamby of Phoenix, AZ, Jennifer Hamby Pfister (Craig) of Charlotte, NC, Matt Driskill (Natalie) of Greenwich, CT, Christian Driskill (Linsey) of Lexington, SC, Leigh Driskill Phelps (John) of Atlanta, GA, Nathan Hamby of Denver, CO.; 16 great grandchildren, Mila Luketic, Lillian Luketic, Brigham Luketic, Hannah Wadsworth, Brodie Wadsworth , Campbell Pfister, Anderson Pfister, Reagan Driskill, Kathryn Driskill, Bates Driskill, Brooklyn Driskill, Gracie Driskill, Caroline Phelps, Annie Phelps, Duncan Phelps, and Rock Phelps.
Most of all she wanted to be remembered for her strong faith in God and her love for her family: two priorities from which she never ever wavered.
We want to thank the many people who have loved Elizabeth so well for a long time, but especially in her later years. All the calls, visits, flowers, cards and helping to celebrate her milestone birthdays each meant so much to her.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 16 at 2 PM EST at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, GA.
