Gayle Whitney Chapman died on December 18, 2019 after a courageous battle with a long term illness. Born on September 2, 1941, she was predeceased by her parents George Warren Whitney and Ellen Hinig Whitney, her husband Jerome C. Chapman, Jr. (Jerry) and her sister, Lynne Whitney Levenson. A Birmingham native, she attended Birmingham schools and the University of Alabama. She was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, the John Parke Custis chapter of DAR and a charter member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Gayle is survived by her sons, Jerry Chapman, III and his wife Danna of Birmingham, Warren Whitney Chapman and his wife Rita of Mentone, her daughter Lynne Ellen Chapman also of Birmingham and her grandchildren, Jerry Chapman IV, Joe Chapman and his wife Caitlin, Anna Chapman and John Chambers.
A visitation will be held from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood. A family graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that any memorials be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 3736 Montrose Road, Mountain Brook, AL 35213.
