George A. Gomperts

He was born on September 8, 1924 to the late George Gomperts and Beryl Hemphill Ramey Gomperts.

He was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and Birmingham Southern College. While attending the United States Naval Academy he placed third nationally in diving and became instructor of diving and swimming.

In 1947 he married the love of his life Claire Virginia Willard and they were married for seventy one years until her passing in 2018.

In 1949 he began his career with State Farm Insurance serving as an agent for seven years. He retired as agency manager in 1994. George was a member of Vestavia Country Club and Contract Bridge Club, being very competitive in golf, tennis and bridge he won numerous awards and trophies.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Claire Willard Gomperts, his brother Joseph Gomperts and his sister Barbara Gomperts. He is survived by his son Robert D. Gomperts.

A visitation will be held at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood on Thursday, the 29th of December beginning at eleven o'clock in the morning. Graveside services will follow at one o'clock in the afternoon

at Elmwood Cemetery.
