Mrs. Gloria Commander Cormany, of Homewood, Alabama, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017, at the age of 78. Gloria, fondly known as “Meemaw” by her nieces and grandchildren, was a devout Christian believer and lived her life according to His purpose.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Floyd Cagle; father, Louie Frank Commander; stepmother, Kathrine Blackerby; and sister, Janice Commander Meyle.
Survivors include her husband of 35 years, James Cormany; daughter Karen (Jeff) Gaston of Auburn, AL; niece, Melanie (Josh) Bridges of Northport, AL; stepdaughters, Susan Cormany Angelo of Homewood, AL and Lisa Cormany Gant of Northport, AL; stepson Jim (Geneva) Cormany of Lexington, S.C. ; and grandchildren, Eliza Angelo, Sarah Gant, John Cormany, and Ray Cormany; great niece, Mylee Bridges.
Meemaw was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. Strong and determined, she was always willing to share what she had to help others in need. She and James were especially devoted to supporting young people by providing Christmas gifts for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree children; and supporting the Big Oak Ranch, a Christian home for children needing a chance for a family. It was their special honor to sponsor deserving young people in the Homewood community so they could be part of local school and church activities or trips. During an earlier period of her life, she and James helped plan and build the first two Habitat for Humanity homes that were built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
She was a dedicated mother who understood the plight of raising a child alone, and provided loving support to others who were going through similar circumstances. Meemaw had many beloved dogs who were her other babies that brought her great joy. Each and every one lived well, and she never stopped missing them when they went on to “doggie heaven.”
Meemaw was a wonderful gardener who could identify and cultivate many native Alabama ferns and other plants. She had an affection for beautiful antique porcelains and dolls.
She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
Visitation is Tuesday Jan. 31 from 5-7 pm at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL. Graveside service and burial will be Wednesday, February 1 at 11 am at Ridout’s Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale, AL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests financial donations in her honor to Big Oak Ranch:
