Vann was born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 10, 1928, to Sarah Vann Henagan and Charles Stewart Henagan. He graduated from Ramsey High School in 1947. He attended Auburn University and pledged Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps in 1951. Having earned the rank of Sergeant, he received an Honorable Discharge in 1953 and remained in the Inactive Reserve until 1958. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Alabama, rejoined ATO, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics in 1956.
While attending the University of Alabama he met Ann Douglas. They were married July 5, 1957.
He began his banking career with American National Bank & Trust Company in Mobile, Alabama, and eventually moved to First National Bank of Birmingham in 1958, which later became AmSouth Bank. He retired from AmSouth in December 1992, following a career that began as an Assistant Cashier in the Green Valley Branch in Hoover, before Hoover was incorporated. He was promoted to Branch Manager, and during his time in this position, was robbed twice at gunpoint and locked in the vault afterwards. Following positions in Correspondent Banking and the Commercial Loan Department, he retired as a Senior Vice President in Public Funds Administration.
During his storied banking career, Vann served the community though a variety of positions in various professional organizations. These included Business Council of Alabama Treasurer, Carraway Methodist Medical Center Advisory Board member, Vestavia Kiwanis Club President, American Lung Association Director, National Council of Christians and Jews Director, Children of Slain Police Officers Fund Secretary and Treasurer, American Institute of Banking President, and Metropolitan Kiwanis Club of Birmingham member. He was a lifelong member of Canterbury United Methodist Church.
Following Vann’s retirement, he traveled the world with Ann. They visited Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, England and Germany to name a few.
Vann’s love of banking was overshadowed only by his selfless love of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Florence Henagan West, and brother, Charles Stewart Henagan, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, his daughters, Elizabeth Henagan Arnold (Scott) of Vestavia and Susan Henagan Logan (Thomas) of Mountain Brook, and five grandchildren, Douglas Logan Rathel (Hayden), Sarah Hayden Logan, Vann Logan, Maggie Logan, and Kaye Arnold.
